Well, at least we had one good day of weather at Shippensburg for the PIAA Championships. Friday was beautiful, but it didn't take too long on Saturday before the weather became "less than ideal". Despite the inclement conditions, AAA had a much better meet than last year. In terms of total medals won, our AAA girls collected 32, seven more than last year, and the most earned in the past five years. In comparison to 2004, this year we improved our gold medal count by one, our silver medal total by four and our bronze medal take by two. Laurel Highlands sophomore, Breehana Jacobs, was the AAA girl who had the best meet at Shippensburg. She claimed gold in the 100 dash, silver in the 200 dash and anchored the Fillies' 400 relay team to a 6th place finish. Caitlin Hewitt of Greater Latrobe didn't reach her goal of 13 feet in the pole vault, but I'm sure the winning of the PIAA gold medal eased her disappointment. Considering the wind and the rain she had to contend with, Caitlin's winning jump of 11-9 was quite a feat, especially in light of the fact that Easton's Lindsay Regan, the defending state champ and PIAA recordholder, couldn't clear 11-6 on any of her three attempts at that height. Caitlin also brought home a seventh place medal from the long jump. The WPIAL's third gold medalist was Baldwin's Jordan Veney. The senior, who has dominated the discus in the west, proved her dominance was statewide as she captured the PIAA title in the rain with an excellent toss of 146-11. Although only three girls brought home the gold, there were still many other outstanding achievements produced at Shippensburg. Junior Charelise Davis of Oakland Catholic was a double individual medalist as she placed 3rd in the 200 and 6th in the 100. In the 400 dash, the WPIAL dominated with four medalists. Sophomores Kelly Langhans of North Allegheny and Megan Duncan of Norwin captured the silver and bronze medals, respectively while Penn Hills' junior Jasmine Cottle took 4th and West Mifllin senior Monica Allen finished 7th. 400 must be the lucky number for the WPIAL, because we also dominated the 400 relay. Defending PIAA champs Penn Hills finished strong, but came up .15 seconds short of West Chester Henderson. Also winning medals in this event were the teams from Canon-McMillan (5th), Laurel Highlands (6th) and Woodland Hills (7th). In addition to Veney's gold in the discus, the WPIAL did very well in the throws. Hempfield junior, Sammi Fetter, placed 2nd in the shot put and 5th in the discus while Connellsville senior, Amanda Sines, finished 5th in the shot and 8th in the discus. Senior Marlee Kevech of Trinity captured the bronze in the javelin. The WPIAL also did very well in the vertical jumps by claiming three medals in each of those events. In addition to Hewitt's pole vaulting gold, the bronze medal in that event went to junior Kendall Butch of Butler. Kendall also earned an 8th place medal in the high jump. Valley senior, Mycaiah Clemons, finished her high school career with four PIAA medals as she took the silver in the 100 meter hurdles. She was edged out for first by only .03 seconds. However, not all went well for AAA at Shippensburg. For the second year in a row, the WPIAL girls fared poorly in the distance races and the horizontal jumps. If it weren't for Butler freshman, Amanda Malecky, who placed sixth in the 800 with a fine 2:15.52 (11th on All-Time WPIAL List), the WPIAL would have again been shut out of medals in the 800, 1600, 3200 and the 4 X 800 relay. As for the horizontal jumps, junior Caitlin Hewitt of Greater Latrobe was our lone medalist as she took 7th in the long jump. In team competition, Penn Hills was the highest scorer from the WPIAL, finishing in a tie for third place with 23 points. The Indians also finished third last year at Shippensburg. A recap of the AA PIAA meet is at the bottom of the AA honor roll.
