5/28/06 11:12 pm As of now, all marks from the PIAA AAA individual track and field championships are on the AAA honor roll and incorporated into the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 list. If you have any marks that will alter the final rankings, please submit them to me as soon as possible. To start things off, the weather at Shippensburg was the reverse of last year. It rained on Friday and was beautiful, although a bit windy, on Saturday. But the nice weather on Saturday didn't seem to help the WPIAL AAA girls in 2006.. Total medal count dropped by eight to twenty-four this year. On the plus side, our take of golds (3), silvers (5) and bronzes (4) remained the same as in 2005. Leading the way for AAA was the same girl who led the way last year. Laurel Highland's Breehana Jacobs was the WPIAL's only repeat gold medalist as she cruised to an easy win in the 100 meter dash. Unfortunately, the 11.47 she posted carried a wind reading of .3 mph over the legal limit, so she was denied the breaking of Tonja Stevens' 11.66 PIAA record. However, to ease her dissappointment, Breehana later breezed in with a 23.85 200 to capture her second gold medal of the day. That time ties the Lady Filly junior with olympian Lauren WIlliams for the second fastest in WPIAL history. AAA's other gold medalist was Marshall University recruit, Sammi Fetter. The Hempfield senior claimed silver on Friday by putting the shot a personal best 46-0½, a mark good enough for 4th place on the All-Time WPIAL list and then came back on Saturday to win the discus and her first gold medal. Also taking home individual silver medals were three other WPIAL girls. Junior Becky Novacek of Hopewell, who already has PIAA gold from volleyball and basketball, came up a little short in her quest of adding a high jump gold medallion to her already impressive collection. Woodland Hills' sophomore Cambrya Jones won her silver medal in the 200 after securing an eighth place one in the 100 dash. Senior Ashley Turici of Seneca Valley picked an ideal time to explode with a career best javelin throw as her 144-1 put her on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 list, the National Federation Track Honor Roll and, most importantly, on the PIAA awards stand collecting a silver medal. Taking home a relay silver for the second year in a row was Penn Hills. The Lady Indians ran a 47.99, the second fastest in WPIAL history, but were edged out of gold by less than a hundredth of a second by the team from Simon Gratz. Teams from Penn Hills now own the five fastest 400 relay times ever run by WPIAL girls. Claiming a bronze medal and keeping the WPIAL from being shut out of medals in the distance races was Penn Hills' Kaitlin Grimm. The Lady Indian senior ran a strong 10:52.01 in the 3200, a time good enough to place her in 8th position on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. In team competition, Laurel Highlands was the highest placing team from the WPIAL. Their 20 points allowed the Lady Fillies to finish in 9th place. jfaiella@webtv.net (to submit marks) 1-425-955-4849 (fax) http://community.webtv.net/jfaiella (website) NOTE: The boys' honor roll is at www.citywpial.org -- Marks should be sent to Jeff Abram at jabram1@pghboe.net |
