( )-WPIAL Championship Meet Placement * *-PIAA Championship Meet Placement 5/25/08 11:22 pm As of now, all marks from the 2008 PIAA AA Track and Field Championship Meet are included in the 2008 WPIAL AA Final Rankings and incorporated into the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 List. If you have any marks that would alter the Final Rankings, please e-mail them to me as soon as possible. What a difference a year makes! In 2007, AA had one of their worst showings ever at States. No gold medals and only 16 medallions won in total, of which none of them were earned in a field event. This year, two gold medals and 25 medallions in total, of which 12 came from the field events. The two individual gold medalists share something in common. In 2007, both girls were WPIAL champions who didn't place at Shippensburg. In 2008, they both defended their WPIAL titles, but this year they both returned home as PIAA State Champions. Mt. Pleasant's Abbey Way just missed medaling in the pole vault last year as she tied for 9th place, but this year the Viking senior cleared 11'6" on her final attempt to secure the state championship. That vault matched her PR and leaves Abbey in 7th place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. Springdale's Alexa Sarsfield won the WPIAL 400 meter dash title in 2007, but could only muster a 14th place finish at Shippensburg. This year, the Dynamo sophomore, not only defended her WPIAL title, but ran a great 57.48 on Saturday to claim the PIAA gold medal. Later in the afternoon, Alexa took the baton in 5th place in the 1600 meter relay and ran a blazing 57.1 anchor split to lead the Dynamos to a bronze medal and a place in WPIAL girls' track history. On Friday, the all-underclass Springdale quartet of Stephanie King, Laura Gajdosik, Brittany Loveland and Alexa Sarsfield won their preliminary heat with a time of 3:59.49 to become the first WPIAL AA squad to break 4 minutes in the 1600 meter relay. With their finals' time of 3:58.78, the 2008 Dynamos are not only the fastest AA 1600 meter relay team in WPIAL history, but the only one on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. Six PIAA silver medals were won by WPIAL individuals or teams. Quaker Valley, four time defending WPIAL champions in the 400 meter relay, lowered their WPIAL leading time to 48.61, but were edged out for gold by Swenson Arts for the second year in a row. The 48.61 by the foursome of Aleeda Kimbrough, Dakkia Kimbrough, Shemaine Benson and Christa Rogers leaves the 2008 Lady Quaker team in 13th place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 list. And speaking of Christa Rogers, the Morgan State volleyball recruit also earned a silver medal in the 100 meter dash and bronze ones in the 100 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash to complete her stellar high school career with a total of 10 PIAA medals and 15 WPIAL medallions. Amazingly, 12 of her WPIAL medals are gold! Also ending a stellar high school career on Saturday was Neshannock's Kacey Gibson. The Florida State bound distance star earned a silver medal in the 3200 meter run with an outstanding 10:41.76, a time that leaves her in 4th place on the All-Time WPIAL chart. In addition to her track accomplishments, Kacey finishes high school with three WPIAL cross country gold medals and one PIAA state cross country championship. Also ending her scholastic career on a high note was Mt. Pleasant's Taylor Funk. The Bucknell recruit needed her 14.51 (11th on the All-Time WPIAL list) in the 100 meter hurdle finals to not only gain her a PIAA silver medal, but to also get her the Mt. Pleasant school record which was previously set in 1984 by Amy Hawkins (14.6). Later in the afternoon, Taylor didn't break Amy's 300 meter hurdle school record time of 44.53, but she did run a fine 45.78 to win a bronze medal. The 45.00 that Taylor ran in Friday's preliminary heat places her on the All-Time WPIAL chart in 22nd place. As stated earlier, AA girls earned 12 medals in the field this year at Shippensburg and the two silver ones were captured by Union Area's Cameron Lewis and Freedom Area's Ashley Adams. Cameron, a junior, took second place in the long jump with a PR leap of 17'11½". Ashley, also a junior, placed 5th in the discus with a hurl of 130'9", but PR'd in the shot put with a toss of 41'9½" to earn a silver medallion in that event along with a spot (24th) on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 rankings. Also of note concerning the field events: earning three PIAA medals in the jumps to top off her excellent high school career was Riverside's Ashley Lotz. She placed 4th in the high jump, 5th in the long jump and 8th in the triple jump. During the past four years (3 at Riverside & 1 at Butler), Ashley won 11 WPIAL medals in the jumping events. In team competition, Quaker Valley was the highest scoring squad from the WPIAL as the Lady Quakers finished 4th with 35 points. Swenson Arts won the PIAA title with 55 points. jfaiella@webtv.net (to submit marks) 1-425-955-4849 (fax) http://community.webtv.net/jfaiella (website)
