Unfortunately for AA, the weather was the only thing that was hot this past weekend at Shippensburg. Luckily for the WPIAL, top-seeded Cameron Lewis and Ashley Adams lived up to their billing or it could have been the worst state meet ever for the WPIAL. Outside of their four gold medals, only one silver and one bronze medal went to a WPIAL athlete. In all, 16 total medallions were captured by District 7, tying 2007's poor medal performance. As opposed to 2007 when AA was shut out in the field events, 2009's distribution was evenly divided (8-track, 8-field). As mentioned earlier, AA's two superstars came through for the WPIAL. Union Area's Cameron Lewis claimed gold in the long jump on Friday and came back on Saturday to double up in the triple jump. The senior who is headed to West Virginia State on a volleyball scholarship didn't produce PR winning marks, but did turn in two solid gold medal jumps (LJ-18"5¼" & TJ-38'11¼"). Cameron, in her first year of triple jumping, won both the WPIAL and PIAA championships and ended up the 5th best triple jumper in WPIAL history. In long jumping, Cameron ends her scholastic career in 7th place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 list. Likewise for Freedom Area's Ashley Adams, the Lady Bulldog senior didn't PR in either of her specialties, but did record solid throws in both the discus (145'5") and shot put (44'7½") to win the state titles. The two-time PIAA shot put champion finishes her high school career as the third best in WPIAL history. In the discus, her 157'2" toss at the WPIAL Championships places the Duquesne University recruit solidly in 2nd place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. The lone silver medalist from the WPIAL was Brentwood's Maggie Wissler. The Lady Spartan senior who is headed to Radford University in the fall ran her fastest 800 ever to finish second in that event. Maggie's time of 2:15.26, the 3rd best ever for a WPIAL AA runner, leaves her in 14th place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. Bringing home the WPIAL's lone bronze medal from Shippensburg was South Park's Haley Pisarcik and I am amazed that she did it. The 800 finals was her sixth hard race of the weekend in low to mid-80's degree heat and the Lady Eagle junior still managed to turn in a sizzling 2:16.12, a time good enough to place her on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 list. In PIAA team competition, leading the way for the WPIAL was Freedom Area. With 23 points, the Lady Bulldogs finished in 7th place. jfaiella@webtv.net (to submit marks) http://community.webtv.net/jfaiella (website) |
