*-Time converted from yardage ( )-WPIAL Championship Meet placement
3:25 pm 5/31/10 As of now, all marks from the 2010 PIAA AAA Championships are included in the AAA honor roll and incorporated into the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 Lists. If you have any marks that will alter the Final Rankings, please submit them as soon as possible. As opposed to last year, when we had two hot and muggy days of competition, only on Saturday did the athletes have to deal with those conditions. Friday was very comfortable, temperatures around 70 degrees and no sun to be found anywhere. What was the same as last year was the outstanding performance of the AAA girls. They matched 2009's 33 medal output, but they increased their gold medal take from three to five and their silver medal haul from three to seven. And in team competition, the WPIAL dominated by taking home both PIAA trophies. Capturing the team title, the first ever by a AAA WPIAL school, was Penn Hills with 48 points. Hempfield racked up 40 points to secure the runner-up trophy. Only one word can describe the championship meet that the fantastic five sprinters of Penn Hills had this past weekend---AWESOME! In addition to the team title, the following is what those five Lady Indians accomplished. The 400 meter relay team of Paige Fields, DeShawn Squires, Christina Roberson and Iman Wilkerson, with three good hand-offs, blew out the rest of the field with a blazing 47.37, the fastest time in WPIAL history. Not to be outdone, the 1600 meter relay team of Squires, Roberson, Wilkerson and Jordan Lee, not only blew out the rest of the field, but also destroyed the PIAA record and the previous best time in WPIAL history. When Lee took the baton, the Penn Hills' anchor was five meters behind the Abington anchor, but in less than 55 seconds later, Lee crossed the finish line with a five meter victory over that same Abington girl. Lee's great anchor leg gave the Lady Indian quartet an unbelievable time of 3:46.31, six seconds faster than their WPIAL record time of 3:52.37. On an individual basis, junior Iman Wilkerson placed second in the 200 with a 24.95 and claimed a bronze medal in the 100 with a personal best 12.04. Besides her gold medal winning anchor split in the 1600 relay, Pitt bound senior Jordan Lee captured a bronze medal in the 200 (25.31) and a silver one in the 400. Her 400 time of 55.43 leaves her in 3rd place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. Leading the way for team runner-up Hempfield were junior Rachel Serafin and senior Amber Valimont. Serafin successfully defended her PIAA discus title with a personal best toss of 144-0, a mark that moves her into 8th place on the All-Time WPIAL discus list. Rachel also PR'd in the shot put (44'3¼") to claim her first state title in that event and will enter her senior year as the 9th ranked shot putter in WPIAL history. In the 1600, Duquesne bound Valimont surprised her competition and the crowd by passing State College's Chloe Schmidt on the final straight-a-way to secure a one second victory with an excellent time of 4:54.02, third best in WPIAL history. In addition to Iman Wilkerson and Jordan Lee, five other WPIAL girls captured silver medals. Hopewell senior Elise Farris ran a personal best 2:11.23 in the 800, a time that leaves her in 4th place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. Oakland Catholic's Taylor Doaty, who spent most of the season injured, placed second in the 100 hurdles (14.28) and seventh in the 300 hurdles (46.03). The 14.28, which ties her personal best 100H time, places the senior in 4th place on the All-Time WPIAL list while her 2009 time of 43.83 in the 300's leaves her in the 6th spot on that All-Time WPIAL chart. Also winning two medals for the second year in a row was Elizabeth-Forward's Tori Paterra. The Miami University recruit earned silver in the javelin with a National Honor Roll throw of 145'4" and placed 4th in the shot put with a toss of 40'11¾". Tori, with her gigantic 162'9" at the WPIAL Championships, leaves high school as the 2nd ranked javelin thrower in WPIAL history. Baldwin senior, Brittany Edwards, was also a double medal winner. She placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 39'4½" and 5th in the long jump (18'0½"). Duquesne bound Brittney ends her career as the 11th ranked long jumper and 3rd ranked triple jumper in WPIAL annals. The final silver medalist from the WPIAL was also the youngest, Hempfield sophomore, Larisa Debich. Adding eight points to the Lady Spartan team runner-up cause, Debich cleared 12'0" to place second in the pole vault. With a personal best vault of 12'6", Larisa enters her junior year in a tie for 2nd place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. Also bringing home a bronze medal in addition to Penn Hills' Iman Wilkerson and Jordan Lee was Canon-McMillan's Chelsea Zahn. The Duquesne bound senior hurled the discus a personal best 134'1", a mark that lands her in 25th place on the All-Time WPIAL list. Also of note from the PIAA meet was the demise of the 28 year-old All-Time WPIAL top time in the 3200 meter relay. Fox Chapel's 1982 time of 9:16.25 was taken out by not one, but two WPIAL teams. North Allegheny, consisting of the all-underclass squad of Lizzie Appleton, Halie Carter, Alex Gambill and Eleni Mermigas, earned a fourth place medal with the new #1 time in WPIAL history, a swift 9:12.23, Norwin also broke the old standard as the Lady Knights recorded a 9:15.44 to capture a seventh place medal. thsgcc@webtv.net (to submit marks) http://community.webtv.net/jfaiella (website) http://wpialboysaatrack.webs.com (boys' AAA & AA honor rolls) |
