( )--WPIAL Championship Meet Placement * *-PIAA Championship Meet Placement 5/27/07 9:50 pm As of now, all marks from the 2007 PIAA AAA Track and Field Championship Meet are included in the WPIAL AAA Final Rankings and incorporated into the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 List. If you have marks that will alter the final rankings, please submit them to me as soon as possible. The temperature was very hot at Shippensburg on Friday and Saturday, but our AAA times were even hotter. New all-time WPIAL best times were produced in three events and it might have been done in five events if it weren't for a couple of mishaps. AAA earned 28 total medals this year, up four from 2006. Five of those medallions were gold, compared to three last May. Of course, three of 2007's gold medals were taken home by one girl, the same girl who took home two of the three from 2006. Yes, Breehana Jacobs, the Laurel Highlands superstar, became the first WPIAL AAA girl to win all three of the sprints at the state meet and she did it in style, too! For the second year in a row she won the 100 dash in a state record time, but this year the record counted since the wind was neglible. Her 11.64 eclipsed Tonja Stevens' time of 11.66 from 1985. In the 400 finals, her fourth race of the day, Breehana didn't break the PIAA record of 53.11, but she did gut out a not too shabby 53.58, only about a full 1½ seconds faster than her closest challenger (Candy Young) in WPIAL history. The heat and the number of races (5) finally caught up to Breehana in the 200 as she could "only" muster up a 24.10 to win that title. The South Carolina bound senior finished her high school career with 8 WPIAL and 6 PIAA gold medals. In total, Breehana has at home, 14 WPIAL and 9 PIAA medallions. Also making history at the meet was Hopewell senior, Becky Novacek, Also capturing gold for the WPIAL was Hempfield's Kim Kanala. After placing 2nd in the shot put on Friday with a PR toss of 42-6, the junior also PR'd in the discus on Saturday to win the title by two feet. With her gold medal hurl of 149-9, Kim will begin next year in the #3 position on the All-Time WPIAL discus list. In the 800, North Allegheny senior Kelly Langhans couldn't catch Easton's nationally ranked Chanelle Price, but her pursuit enabled Kelly to produce the fastest 800 time in WPIAL history, a blazing 2:10.31. In addition to her silver medal in the 800, Kelly earned a bronze medal in the 400 dash and finished high school in 7th place on the All-Time WPIAL 400 chart. Also having a good meet was Seneca Valley's Da'Lynn Mills. The Pitt bound senior earned a silver medal in the high jump and a bronze one in the 200 meter dash. Da'Lynn leaves high school as the 10th ranked high jumper and the 6th ranked 200 meter runner in WPIAL history. Finishing her high school career on a high note was Penn-Trafford's Diana Filtz. The senior, heading to the University of Richmond in the fall, garnered a PIAA bronze medal in the 1600 to go along with her gold one from the WPIAL. After running a strong 5:01.42 in the heat on Friday, Diana came back on Saturday with an even stronger 4:56.44, making her the 5th fastest miler in WPIAL history. Rounding out the list of bronze medalists from the WPIAL are Greensburg Salem's Corinne Free and Moon's Layne Baggett. Corinne, a senior who has a career best toss of 144-2, leaves high school as the 5th best discus thrower on the All-Time WPIAL list. Layne, a sophomore, won the bronze in the 100 hurdles with a personal best 14.68, 15th on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart. She also won a medal in the 300 hurdles by placing 8th with a time of 45.88. All was not rosy for the WPIAL at Shippensburg. A couple of mishaps cost some of our girls dearly. Norwin's Megan Duncan was cruising to a silver medal in the 300 hurdles and possibly the best time in WPIAL history when she lost her balance after clearing the last hurdle and fell head first just short of the finish line. Megan did get to her knees and crawled over the line, but had to settle for a 6th place medal and a diminished time of 45.41. At least Megan did get to team with Shannon Abraham, Amanda Cotherman and Alison Mols on Friday in the 4 X 400 relay to anchor Norwin to the #1 spot in WPIAL history with a great time of 3:53.81. A botched handoff during the third exchange of the 4 X 100 relay finals cost Penn Hills a possible gold medal and also a chance at the fastest time in WPIAL history. During the trials on Friday, the Lady Indians won their heat with a 47.97, the 2nd fastest time ever by a WPIAL team. Their disqualification on Saturday, not only cost them a medal, but also a chance to surpass Penn Hills' 2004 team as the fastest in WPIAL history. As a sidebar, with the 47.97 posted Friday by their 2007 quartet, Penn Hills High School now boasts the six fastest 4 X 100 relay teams on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 chart---quite an accomplishment! jfaiella@webtv.net (to submit marks) 1-425-955-4849 (fax) http://community.webtv.net/jfaiella (website)
