As you can see the damage to property on the beach, was almost total for anything one or two stories high. Most of the homes on the beach, that were built prior to the building codes being changed, starting around 1980, were totally demolished.

It is easy to see that they should never have allowed anything to be built within 200 yards of the beach. We were lucky, our condo is located about 1000 ft. from the beach, and we sustained very little damage.

The way the residents and volunteers worked together during the clean-up was a thing to behold. The resiliency of people and the way they respond after a disaster is really fantastic.

If you were to look at the areas along the coast today you would see very little evidence of "OPAL" with the exception of the beaches themselves. The beach erosion was horrendous and will take years to return to normal.

Oct. 4th, 1995 is a day that will be forever etched in my mind.
