~ PORTALS ~

What are "Multiple PORTALS"?

Portals are simply additional "registered" doorways into your website. Having a few extra entry points will help surfers find your site. For example, using my page devoted to my beloved City Councilman as an example:

http://community-2.webtv.net/kdine/ap

I have additionally registered this webpage using a Geocities' site as another entry ("portal") into my "ap" site:

http://www.geocities.com/csdine/cra.htm

In using "inFIND" to test-search for my site using various keywords, sometimes my Pagebuilder site is found first, and sometimes my Geocities' portal is found first, and occasionally both are together in the same search results, but not always!  Obviously, having more than one portal can increase your chance of being found. However, flooding the web with an excessive number of portal pages to your site is considered spamming and they could delete your listing if you are found doing this!

You can also register several of the pages on your site, i.e., have multiple "portals" on the same server. When your site gets spidered some of the engines may even automatically spider and list some of your site's secondary linked pages...this has happened to me; for example, I found this page on a search-list and I never even registered it:

http://community-2.webtv.net/kdine/ap/page3.html

This page is just phone numbers and it would have been a dead-end for any web-surfer without the "home" link, so I quickly installed a link at the top of this page.

Each of your pages should have a link home on it so that a dead-end doesn't happen to you too. There is a meta tag that can tell the bots not to spider your accessory pages (like my phone number page), but since we can't add to our <HEAD>, this tag probably won't work for us, so it's just safer to add the "HOME" link to all of your pages.

The numbers' Game.

My friend, Craig, makes his living by successfully registering webpages high on the lists. According to Craig, since the major search-engines use different criteria in their programming, and since the engines are always changing their search programs, Craig says it's a full-time job keeping abreast of the rapidly evolving search-engine field.

According to Craig, his firm must design different entry pages ("portals") to match the preferential criteria of all the various search-engines since, in the commercial area, the competition is so keen with everyone jockeying for the first page, which is generally only the top 10 spots.

Craig's business markets primarily Hawaii vacations and there is a lot of competition there. Obviously, if you are hoping to register your Pagebuilder site in competition with the Big-Boys you may be disappointed...which brings us back to the importance of unique "Keywords".

I consistently land in the top ten spots with my "Councilman Alex Padilla" (the rat!) website because there is just not that much competition...and of course, I don't get that many hits either (5 - 10 per day) - but I am #1 in my field! :-)

I think these examples show the inherent dilemma you face when registering your site...the more topical and less unique your subject matter, then the more competition you will surely face.

Frankly, on some topics, the time wasted to successfully register your pages with the search-engines may be better spent on promoting your site in other ways. See KMA's Homepage Help links below for additional promotional tips.

Everyone has to decide for themselves how much time they want to spend promoting their websites. Nothing ventured nothing gained! Despite my cautionary note of realistic expectations, I can honestly say that it has worked well for me and it was relatively easy to do! I hope it works well for you too!

There are several alternatives to using search engines to increase your traffic:

Net4Tv Article

Namezero offers a free SHORT ".com" addy that is compatible with Pagebuilder. This gives you a potential for a free extra portal to your pages; however, since this is a "Frames" page it is unknown how effective registering this page will be - please let me know if you are successful registering your Netzero Frame pages.

For more information on Namezero see Beth Candy's Net4Tv article.

(**CAUTION - Namezero may no longer be compatible with Webtv)
