FEVRONIA STAR

How can I put into words what has so touched my heart and has so humbled me. How could I have ever known such a tiny being possessed such an immense spirit and would be a messenger and harbinger of such great gifts. Who am I to be able to serve and minister to the needs of His own. It is true that I always pray to meet the Divine invitations placed before me, and that spring morning as I heard her alarming chirps, through the grace of God once again all my senses and instincts responded.
She had landed beneath the largest tree in our yard. I lifted her into my anxious hands and could hardly believe this almost alien looking creature. I could find no nest, I know now that it was probably in the hollow of the tree. It did seem strange though, because I knew where our Robin, Wren and Chickadee nests were, but I had no idea there was another nest somewhere. The timing was perfect, if I had not been there at that moment... I hate to think what would have happened. A baby bird goes through so many changes after they hatch. She was not totally bare, and now I know she was about a week old. Her little white sticks that had no feathers on them were already emerging and her beak was bright yellow and wide and she sort of resembled a clown. What was most amazing, was the vibration of her body, it was incredible. What a life force in my hands, so tiny and frail but so strong and even brave. She met my curious stares and chirped loudly when I spoke to her. Holding her close to me to warm her, I phoned my friends at the wildlife rescue centers and they said I most likely had a Starling. We made sure she was not injured, and then knowing me as they do, they said, "You can do it Lane, you can care for her, we are so full we have no room". So after getting every bit of information I could from my friends, the two of us began our beautiful and adventurous relationship. If I ever write a book on my wildlife rescues, I can go into greater detail but for now I will tell you that she is now going on 8 months, and will never be returned to the wild. To her, I am MaMa!

In a tickled way, I have to say I was set up. My friends knew Starlings bond with people unless they follow a certain procedure to prevent it from happening. They also knew it was legal, in the state of Tennessee, to keep a Starling. In fact, it's the only wild bird you can keep. They are part of the Mynah bird family, if that gives you any idea of their capability to talk. Needless to say, my baby Star is talking up a storm, and her vocabulary grows every week. My life with Star is a true blessing everyday. When I wake up, she exercises with me, sitting on my shoulder for some of my excercises, and then my head for others. Her favorite thing to do, other than her baths, is to have me hold her under my neck, surrounding her with my hands, and kiss her head and up and down her back. She usually stays there for no less than ten minutes. Then she's off hopping and waddling across the floor, talking and whistling, and doing as Arnie the Darling Starling's mother so well described the classic pecking that looks like she's making a teepee with her beak. She also loves to go on the road with me. Recently when I was performing in Washington DC, it was hysterical to watch people react as Eddie carried her covered cage on to the eleavator to go up to our room. As we travel in the motorcoach, she's so much fun to listen to as she talks and whistles songs along the way.
