"BRING" lyrics (parody)

Commentary

Okay - for those outside of Arizona, here's the story...our local Air America Radio affiliate was bought by a Christian Right station...a rather suspicious move which many largely suspect was an underhanded way of forcing the progressive side of political debate off the air in a major city. Air America Phoenix went off the air on March 1, 2006. Staff of the station worked tirelessly to obtain another station to get Air America back on the air in Phoenix - and they also had help from its devoted listeners (even though i was being clobbered on my taxes, i was happy to contribute...some of you may very well be visiting this page as a result!) - be sure to check gotstation.com for more listener sponsors!! Air America went BACK on the air here on April 3, 2006!!

One of the many cool things about our local affiliate is the music they play for their commercial break music - i often find myself checking to make sure i have the radio on as opposed to the tape player since it often seems like the people choosing the music raided my music collection! (When they play eveything from "Why Can't We Be Friends" from "War" and "Mahna Mahna" by the Muppets, anyone who knows me knows i have reason to get a little nervous about the state of my cd's!) One song that is often featured is one of my all time favorite songs, "Sing" by Travis. In fact this was the song that The M & M Show signed off with...and since that was the last of the local shows broadcast on the old station on their last day, that was essentially their "sign off" song.

So what follows is a special tribute to Air America i wrote as a tribute to everyone who worked hard to get the station back as quickly as possible...of course written to the tune of "Sing"! Like most of my parodies, it just naturally evolved - when i would sing along in my car, i would often sing "BUT THEN WE GOT IT BACK ON THE AIR" after the "nothing...nothing...nothing" part, anticipating its return. Then i would find myself just singing the song and then singing "Goyette - is it time for him - NOT YET" - and then it hit me there's a parody here to be written...i didn't really sit down to write it - i pretty much just let the various bits and pieces come to me a bit at a time and here is the final result! So here is my tribute and my "THANK YOU" to everyone at the station and all the listeners who helped get it back...

"BRING" dedicated to the national Air America Network, the local PHX affiliate, and its listeners!

Goyette [1] - is it time for his show, oh no, NOT YET
I regret - he's been replaced with fire and brimstone

"Curses" [2] - they're tryin' to suppress our voices
Leavin' us no choices - but a litany of right wing radio clones

Well we need to bring - bring - bring - bring
Back the truth telling - to counter the right wing
We need to bring Air America back

It's getting gruesome
Mornings without Mike Newcomb [3]
And the truthsome liberty lovin' he keeps alive
Oh boy - i'm missing McChesney [4] and Malloy
Al Franken and the joy that Randi brings to my roads [5] when i drive

Yeah we need to bring - back the truth telling
Rush is just disgusting
Hannity's a ding-a-ling
O'Reilly's deafening
The balance back we need to bring

[6] Oooohhhhh....
Sam Seder's at the computer screen
While Garofalo
Screams.....

With a tear - i listened to what there was left to hear
It's as i feared....
Nothing - nothing - hatred - bigotry - distortions - weasels - "leasels"[7] -
BUT THEN WE GOT BACK ON THE AIR

The listeners helped to bring... Air America back just in time for spring
Now the right wing's
Not monopolizing
The talk with their spinning
We brought back the truth telling
And don't forget the "Ring
of Fire" & weekend programming
Laura Flanders hosting
"Radio Nation"
Welcome back from vacation!

NOTES:
[1] Charles Goyette - local host who was on the old station but has not yet committed to being a part of the new station ... he's currently taking a vacation/break - although the current line-up as it stands is very strong, he would nonetheless be welcome back and i hope he decides to eventually return back "home" - even though he's not yet on the new station, i left his reference in since (a) it's too good a line (b) it's more a reference to the old station going off the air and (c) the "is it time for his show - oh no - not yet" can also be seen as a double entendre given we're waiting to see if he'll eventually return to AAPhx.

[2] Of course, when it's sang, it's more like "coi-ses"!!

[3] Dr. Mike Newcomb - not only another awesome local host (known as a "truth telling liberty loving" liberal) but also now managing the new station! A three hour show during the week, managerial duties AND he even does a WEEKEND show that's actually an original "week in review" as opposed to the usual "Best of" type rerun show...WOW! Hats off to this guy! If he wasn't straight and married, he might just actually be "the perfect man" :)

[4] Fred McChesney - another local host - Our local affiliate is really great because along with the national shows, it has an amazing number of local shows that are deserving enough to be heard nationally - on the old station, the show was "The M&M Show" co-hosted by his brother. Fred's flying solo on the new station but together or alone, this is probably my favorite of our local shows! Check out foxlies.com !

[5] a play on words of course to "Randi Rhodes" :) Hi, Randi!

[6] This part is sang to the falsetto bit during the instrumental. It's not meant to be derogatory, just in the spirit of fun as the rest of the song - it's always fun listening to Janeane Garofalo ranting on as Sam goes bonkers with the sound effects! Always hilarious interplay between the two!

[7] A little tribute to the "Wait Wait Don't Lie to Me" segment of the Al Franken Show - sigh - i miss hearing Katherine Lanpher crack up when they would play the "Lonely Goatherd" music!
