"Emotional Rape" lyrics (1994)

I can see clearly now
Although I just see
You in front of my eyes
You
Used me - you threw me away
You let me love you for your own entertainment
And forgot to tell me somewhere along the way

Now I
I don't see the same person
Anymore when I see your face
Maybe that's okay
Cause I can't bring myself
To look at your face anyway
I'll
Probably forever be this way
Even when someone who loves me
Reaches out to touch me
Even if they love me
I'll just have to
Turn away turn away turn away turn away

Because you used me
Like you weren't supposed to
I used to be a kid at heart
And just like a toy
I'll break if you don't play with me right
I'm broken now
I'm not a toy anymore
Nor a kid at heart anymore
I don't know what I am anymore
I just know it's broken

I
I never gave you consent
To play with parts of me
That shouldn't be touched
Inside
If you weren't doing the things
I thought you said you were

Shower after shower
Doesn't make me feel cleansed
Because soap only cleans my skin
And it's deep inside where I'm
Soiled

And TV
Won't let me - forget
EIther
I'll see your face
On an actor's head
Or hear similar
Laughter to yours
In the movie theatre
Instead
And even your name
(Why such a common one?)
Stops me cold
When I read it
Or hear it
Or say it
And I have to
Turn away turn away turn away turn away
Turn away turn away turn away turn away

Because you - you - you
Molested my emotions
And nevermore can I escape
Your memory when I try to go on with my life
For you - for you
Can't - can't forget
An emotional rape

And don't tell me
That it takes time
Because you took all my time
Along with everything else
You took
From
Me

Commentary

A very intense, stark piece. Picture Tori Amos singing in a straight-jacket and you have an idea of the song...it ultimately was more a performance art piece than a melodic song.

This was originally written as the fourth and final part of the "I Was a Twenty-Something Victim of FrankenStein's Go-Go Boy Chase" series and after i had written the previous pieces using such metaphors as hunting prey and the AIDS virus, i wanted to conclude with the most extreme disturbing part where I equate the emotions of the victims of a psychologically abusive relationship with those of physically abusive ones. It made for a wonderfully intense performance art piece but i found it was WAY too deep and dark to serve as a conclusion - especially because there really isn't any sense of closure...so this then became Part Two of the series, following "Sorry" and proceeding "Opportunistic Infection" with "Hunting Trophy" as the new conclusion which is the lightest and most empowering piece.
