never forgotten...

Nikki
1976

My first Labrador, and my first heartbreak. "Nikki", one of a litter of puppies found near my college. Nikki and her two survivng littermates had been exposed to distemper and succumbed within a month.

Layla
1976-1992

Because my college had a wonderful on-campus kennel facility, I was able -- after taking an oath to read and memorize Dick Wolter's Water Dog! -- to persuade a reputable field breeder to allow me to have a daughter of NFC Mi-Cris Sailor. Layla was -- and still remains -- the most remarkable dog I've ever met. In her long life she lived at various times in the college kennels, on a 100 acre farm, in a tiny grad school basement apartment and finally here in the house where I live today. She was amazingly versatile, winning derby points at 11 months and developing a dizzying array of parlor tricks. Although definitely a field dog, she was typey enough to produce my first two show dogs. All eight puppies from her last litter lived to 16. Her last son died in April of 2000 at 18 years old, 24 years to the day from the day I brought Layla home.

Jamaica
1982-1998

Layla's sterling pedigree never hinted there might be a "brown dog" in the woodpile! Although Jamaica certainly tried my patience as a puppy, she eventually blossomed into a lovely girl, the most even tempered dog I've ever lived with. The Queen of Reserves, Jamaica could never quite finish her championship, but she never let that little detail affect her love of life during her lengthy "retirement". The day she died (at 16 1/2) she spent the morning stealing all the young dogs' toys, a huge smile on her face. She will always have a special place in my heart.
