Hi,
Nice to hear from you.
You are correct about the left hand of many pianists.
The LH thumb is the most expressive finger we have!
Many compositions for LH only (e.g. by Dinu Lipatti) are using this 'feature' of the LH 'par excellence'!

I am focussing mainly on classical music, but having some contacts in the 'jazz-scene' is nice too :)

best regards,
Tjako van Schie

Subject: Thank you
I was so glad to find your post on rec.music.makers.piano.   To be
brief, although I've played the piano all of my 55 years (gulp!),being
raised by I.U.,usa, educated parents, and was choir accompanist through
all elementary and high school grades, and then a piano major at Ohio
State (George Hadad)then at North Texas State(for their jazz dept,
mainly), ----it has only been recently (last 5-10 years) that I've
become a serious student of correct technique at the piano, for a fluent
and beautiful tone, and acceptable renderings of the classics.
My piano salvation has found progress in my friends who graduated
under Tetley-Kardos at Ohio State, and then mainly the little book by
the late Josef Lehvinne, "Basic Principles in PianoForte Playing".   Oh,
my that little book is loaded!!!!
I have set to memory the 2 and 3 part inventions, Bach, and much of
the WTC, being advised so by my friends who studied under TK.  How I
love Bach! I've performed as a national finalist for a Creative Arts
Festival over the last five years
http://www.va.gov/vetevent/CAF/photo.html ---I'm on the left with the
hat on, next to another jazz pianist in the show.
My "forte" I suppose is jazz.  Most American jazz pianists have LOUSY
technique, and NO fluency in the left hand.
I have discovered the weakness of many pianists in what I describe
as the "tenor voice" of the left hand, ---an unneeded clumsiness in the
THumb and Index finger exchanges, especially, of the left hand, which
I've found when with patience, we endeavor to develope a closer, melodic
sense there, and that the 1,2, 3 of the L.H. carry important melodic
functions of the music, no matter if it is improv jazz or a Chopin
waltz.
I know you are a VERY busy man, and if you even have time to respond
I would feel blessed.
Another of my favorite pianists is TAMAS VESMAS, Un. of Auckland,
Australia, who occasionally tours the USA.
THANK You for your contributions to
rec.music.makers.piano and I hope to see your posts again.    Your
response to any of my comments would be greatly appreciated.
God bless........Mark Werling , Columbus Ohio USA

Hello Mark,

Thanks for your nice words.
Of course the 'thumb'-lesson was free :) Wait until you hear me talking about using your arm weight and the function of your fingers and hand .... :) (that's the expensive stuff haha!)

My name is pronounced like this:
tjako : the 'a' is like the 'e' in the french word "femme", the 'o' at the end is lik e 'oh!'
van: v=f , the 'a' is like in 'car'
schie:  the 'ch' is a harsh typical dutch sound, (like you have water in your throat after toothbrushing and gargling with the water in your throat.)
the 'ie' is like 'ee' in 'gee!'

As this all might be quite difficult for you to grasp, you might as well call me John :)

I would love to visit your college some time. Maybe you can arrange something? (I could give a masterclass or concert there?)
best wishes,
Tjako

| Dear Mr. Conable
|
| Dutch pianist Tjako van Schie of the Amsterdam Conservatory has | expressed interest in a concert performance and masterclass at Ohio | State.     Without any knowledge of the politics and economics of these | things, I leave the matter at your disposal, | Mr Schie is readily available via Email at: | tjakovanschie@castel.nl
| You perhaps know me by sight moreso than name, I said hello to you in | the hall for violinist Adam Syed who was visiting his old friends at | Ohio State.
| Adam is doing quite well at C.I.M, now studying with Updegraph in a | Masters Degree program.
| THank you for your time.   markwerling@webtv.net

Great news! Maybe they will contact me.
As a way of saying "thank you!" I want to send you a free copy of my Bach-cd if you're interested.
What's your postal address?

Tjako

Well what do you know, initial ice broken!
I have "0" influence on matters of the Great Ohio State University!  So
this is very positive.  THen maybe also have them book a "Big Ten
COnference" tour---to include I.U. Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, etc.
(There's actually eleven US colleges in the "Big Ten Conference").   Or
have your agent book other USA events, anyway.  However they do those
things!!!
