Much of the information contained on these pages is very close to the information of the 601st Field Artillery Battalion (Pack), which was the sister battalion to the 602nd. But each Battalion had their own very unique history, they each fought their own seperate battles. The Battalions trained at Camp Hale, Colorado, fought in the same campaigns, and were usually within a few miles of each other during combat. The men never really knew what units were in the same area. Even batteries within the same battalion never really knew of each others movements or experiences. These two battalions trained together and fought together, but never ever realized it. The two units were at first, to be assigned to the artillery support of the famed First Special Service Force, also known as, FSSF, ( The Devil's Brigade) - or the - ( Black Devil's - a name given to them by the Germans), but each went their own way during combat. But with time, the two Battalions did meet up with the FSSF.
The 601st and the 602nd were non-divisional units. They were not assigned to a certain Division, they were used by whoever needed their fire support. The men called it "The Bastard Battalion" My main interest is in the 601st Field Artillery Battalion (Pack), in which my Dad served. However, I was contacted by people inquiring about the 602nd, so I began this web site to tell that units story during the war in Europe. Much of the information is from Official Army Transcripts and personal stories of those who were there. If you have any information on either of these battalions, I would love to hear from you, and would be pleased to add the information on these sites.
Link to go to the web site on the 601st: there you will find 100's of photograghs of all the places these two battalions served and fought. Also, information on the camps, uniforms, weapons, medals, patches etc.
