notes:
There are no land deeds for William and Lucy Doyle until well after they were married, so it would seem they were living on land owned by Lucy's father, Ed Sublett, located near the foot of Christiansburg Mountain. There are deeds from the 1890's/early 1900's where both William and Lucy bought land from her parents. They originally lived in a log house, and according to William's only surviving granddaughters Irene Doyle Walters and Ruby Rose Miller, this was where their children were born. Lucy's mother, Jane Hall Sublett, was said to be a midwife, and probably assisted in the births of most of the children. Lucy's daughter, Annie Doyle Rose, was also a midwife, and Lucy may have been one as well.
After all the kids were born, William had another house built. This one had two large rooms that faced the railroad tracks and had very high ceilings. The trains going by used to rattle the windows something awful, but not as bad as the earthquake that hit eastern Montgomery County in the 1920's and shifted the house about three inches off it's foundation.
William and Lucy are buried in the Doyle Cemetery located on the property. Lucy died first, from pneumonia, and William, who was also stricken with pneumoia, watched from his bedroom window as she was buried on the hill up from the house.
Both of the houses have since been torn down, as has the barn that used to be up by the cemetery. (Irene Doyle Walters said "Mrs. Dooley had the house torn down so she could see who was coming up the holler.") The cemetery is kept in very nice shape by the present land owners. It sits up on a little rocky hill covered with scrub pines.
Other burials in the cemetery are:
- Charles E. Leonard (1876 - 1908), the first husband of William and Lucy's daughter Annie who later married T.M. Rose.
- Milton J. Kirby (1866 - 1900) and his daughter, Millie Madge Kirby (1900 - 1907).
- Elizabeth Sublet Kirby, daughter of Ed and Jane Hall Sublett
- Delia D. Doyle (2 June 1892 - 1900), William and Lucy's daughter who died at the age of 8.
- Ellis Hampton Doyle (17 Feb 1881 - 14 Jan 1829), buried beside his father William.
- Edward Sublett (father of Lucy Sublett Doyle)
- Jane Hall Sublett (mother of Lucy Sublett Doyle)
Numerous sources give William F. Doyle's middle name as ''Floyd'', but the name on his grave marker is ''Frank Wm. Doyle''. I checked all of the William F. Doyle references (for all individuals of this name) in the Montgomery County deed books, will books and marriage records, and none of them had William's middle name spelled out. It was always abbreviated "F". The name was never given as ''William Doyle'', it was always ''William F. Doyle'' or ''W. F. Doyle'', but Irene Doyle Walters said his name was William Floyd Doyle.
