Jesse Hall of Dutchess Co, NY & Montgomery Co, VA

born: 22 March 1760 in Washington Co, RI
died: 2 Oct 1848 in Alleghany Springs, Montgomery Co, VA
married: Phebe Wilbur about 1780

Jesse Hall came to Montgomery County, Virginia from Dutchess County, New York in 1789, bringing with him his wife, Phebe and several children. He settled on the south fork of the Roanoke River near Alleghany Springs in the southeastern part of the county. He had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War while living in New York, and was granted a pension for that service in 1833.

After his final discharge from the Continental army at the end of 1779, Jesse married his wife Phebe. Her maiden name as well as the exact date and location of their marriage is unknown, but a number of Hall descendants indicated Jesse's wife's name was Phebe Wilbur [this prior to the arrival of the internet and the information (and misinformation) that came with it]. There were also apparent family connections between the Halls and the family of Christopher Wilbur in Rhode Island and New York. In any case, we do know that Jesse's wife was named Phebe because land deeds recorded in Montgomery County, VA give her name as such. Information on Phebe's parents (as well as her date of birth) is included here with the caveat that this relationship has not been proven.

A Brief of Wills & Marriages in Montgomery and Fincastle Counties, Virginia 1733-1833 ( Anne Lowry Worrell, 1932) includes a marriage for a Jesse Hall and Ann Watterson, daughter of Thomas Watterson, dated 12 Jan 1798. This marriage is not recorded in the Montgomery County Marriage Register, nor is there a marriage bond in the courthouse. This marriage to Ann Watterson was also included in Kegley's Virginia Frontier (F. B. Kegley, 1938) p. 598. Kegley's does not give a source for the marriages included in this book, but it's probable Worrell's book, which was published six years earlier, was the source used.

There is a marriage bond for a Jesse Hall Jr. and Ann Watterson, daughter of Thomas Watterson, dated 1 Feb 1825. This marriage is not included in A Brief of Wills & Marriages in Montgomery and Fincastle Counties, Virginia 1733-1833 even though the book covers that year. Apparently, the date in the book is an error, as there is no bond for the marriage and the only Jesse Hall in Montgomery County in 1798 who was old enough to be married was already married to his wife Phebe.

Kegley's Early Adventurers on the Western Waters vol. 2, pp. 136 & 137, lists Montgomery County marriages for 1798 taken from MC microfilm reel #39 (Marriage Bonds 1796-1803) in the Library of VA. There is no Jesse Hall or Ann Watterson in this list.

If the Ann Watterson who married Jesse Hall was the daughter of the Thomas Watterson who deeded the land for Hall's Church in Ironto (as is commonly believed), the 1798 marriage date is made even more unlikely as this Thomas Watterson was not married (to Mary Stephens) until 1795, and certainly would not have had a daughter old enough to marry in 1798.

There is no evidence that Jesse Hall remarried after the death of his wife, Phebe. There are only two additional grantors deeds for Jesse in the courthouse records (besides the two listed above) dated 1831 and 1838. Neither of these deeds give a wife's name, nor is there a record of any wife of Jesse Hall relinquishing her dower interest in the lands sold. Jesse's Revolutionary war pension applications filed in 1833 do not mention a wife, widow, or any family information. Jesse was enumeraed with a female age 60-70 in the 1830 census, and since no wife was mentioned in the 1831 deed, I have given Phebe Hall's date of death as 1830/31. It is possible that the 15 Dec 1828 marriage of a Jesse Hall to Catharine Huff does refer to the Jesse Hall who is the subject of this page, but I am not aware of any evidence that would prove this marriage one way or the other.

Update: The same book mentioned above, (A Brief of Wills & Marraiges of Montgomery and Fincastle Co, VA) includes the following entry:
Poff, Samuel, and Sally Huff, dau. Sam'l Huff, dec., and of Catherine Hall.  Peter Huff, and Jesse Hall, sur. - Aug 31, 1829.
If Catherine Hall had a daughter old enough to be married in 1829, this would suggest Catherine's age would make her more likely to have been a wife of Jesse Hall Sr.
