children:

John Robinson was born August 12, 1749. At this time, his parents names and place of birth are unknown. John married Elizabeth Kern in 1775 or 1776 in Frederick Co, Virginia. They were married by a Lutheran minister who posted the banns of matrimony for them. According to his Revolutionary war pension application filed in Botetourt County in 1820, John enlisted in the 4th VA regiment in Frederick County in 1781, and was at the battle of Yorktown which ended with the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. According to Elizabeth's recollections, however, John had entered the service shortly after they were married and served several tours of duty.

Elizabeth Kern was born in 1758, and as with John, her parents and place of birth are unknown. There is a possibility that she was a daughter of Nicholas Kern who emigrated to America in 1727 and settled in Frederick County. Elizabeth had a nephew named Nicholas Kern who was about 8 years old at the time of her marriage. There was a Nicholas Kern born in 1768 in Frederick County, a son of Adam Kern, and this is probably Elizabeth's family.

Around 1785, John and Elizabeth moved their family to Botetourt County. They lived in Botetourt until John's death in 1820. After John died, Elizabeth went to neighboring Montgomery County to live with her daughter and son in law, William Lewis and Mary "Polly" Woolwine. William owned land in the eastern part of the county on the north fork of the Roanoke river.

    Important note:

A number of online sources list a John Robinson, with the same birthdate as above, and a wife named Elizabeth Kern, with children who married into a Woody family in Burke or Yancey Co, North Carolina. This John Robinson/Robertson left Virginia for North Carolina about 1779, and died in Yancey Co, NC or Franklin Co, VA (depending on the source) in 1835. I believe they have confused certain aspects of the life of the John Robinson who is the subject of this web page (ex., birthdate, wife's name) with their ancestor. For more info on the John Robinson (Robertson) who went to North Carolina, see Lat Robinson's webpage.
