THE EDWARD ROSE FAMILY of MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VIRGINIA

by
Mike Browder

Edward Rose is the earliest known ancestor of our Rose family. The first record we have of him is from 1785, when he had 200 acres of land surveyed on Elliott's Creek which was then in Botetourt County. He next appeares on the 1786 Botetourt County tax list in Capt. Barnett's District. In 1788 Edward is joined on the Botetourt tax list by John, Gabriel and Israel Rose who are believed to be his sons. In 1797 a Nathaniel Rose is listed along with the others on the Montgomery County tax list (the part of Botetourt the Roses were living in was annexed by Montgomery County in 1789/90).

1804 is the last year Edward Rose's name appears on the personal property tax lists, but continues to appear on the land tax lists until 1813. He may have been exempted from the former due to age, although there is no record of such an exemption in the court books. Nathaniel Rose was last listed in 1801, and it s assumed he left Montgomery County for Kentucky about that time. John Rose was last listed in 1797. After 1801, only Edward, Gabriel and Israel appear on the tax lists.

At this time, nothing is known of Edward's wife. She had apparently died prior to 1801, as grantors deeds for Edward Rose give no wife's name, nor is there a record of any wife of Edward Rose relinquishing her dower interest in the land he sold. Edward appears in Montgomery County land records from 1801 to 1813 on Elliott's Creek. He is not listed after 1813, so he presumably died around that time.

Most of Edward Rose's children left Montgomery County before 1810. Sons Israel and Gabriel stayed in the area, and it seems a safe assumption that the later Rose families of Montgomery and Floyd Counties are descended from these two brothers. Israel owned land on Elliott's Creek and Gabriel had land on the south fork of the Roanoke river in the southeastern part of the county (a few miles SE of the town of Christiansburg. The land Edward Rose owned was located on what is now Craig's Mountain Road.). Israel died prior to the 1820 census, probably late 1819 or early 1820 as the sale of his estate was recorded in 1821. Gabriel died in 1833. Trying to sort out their descendants is an ongoing task. Israel Rose did not leave a will, and Gabriel only named one son, also named Gabriel, in his will. Gabriel was named in marriage records as the father of a Charlotte Rose who married John Deweese in 1826 and a David Rose who married Patsey Smith in 1812. Gabriel was also named as the father of a Mary Rose who married Thomas Adney in Franklin County in 1803.

An 1826 Montgomery County land deed names Elizabeth Rose, Sarah Rose, Andrew Rose, Cornelius Rose and Elizabeth Adney who are believed to be the widow (Elizabeth) and children of Israel Rose who sold their interest in a tract of land that Israel had bought from David Craig in 1806. The sale bill of Israel's estate includes the names Abraham Rose, Milly Rose and Sally Rose who may also be his children.

Israel Rose married Elizabeth Stephens in 1785. Gabriel Rose also had a wife named Elizabeth, but her maiden name and their marriage date is unknown. John Rose married Margaret Stephens in 1790, and a Zachariah Rose married Peggy Stephens in 1797. Zach is likely a son of Edward as well. Elizabeth, Margaret and Peggy Stephens were almost certainly related, but since Peggy is a sobriquet of Margaret, it's likely they come from at least two different families. Their parents are still unknown at this time. A Richard Stephens posted bond with Zachariah Rose in 1797, but no relationship is mentioned. Several months before Edward had his land surveyed, a James Steaphens and Solomon Steaphens had land surveyed on Elliott's Creek. These would be likely candidates for Elizabeth, Margaret and Peggy's fathers, but no definite connection has been made.

A number of Edward Rose's descendants moved to Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio. Some descendants of Israel and Gabriel are still in the Montgomery County, VA area today. This web page makes no attempt to follow these descendants out of the Montgomery and Floyd County areas, but hopefully there will be enough info for others to connect their Rose ancestors to their Montgomery County roots.
