UNITY TALKS
Please call or email us to assist or encourage the work of these fun & vital events!

We invite you to join us, in great conversations with fellow Kauaiians, Hawaiians, friends, nieghbors and visitors alike, in cafes, bookstores, churches, living rooms, and even by telephone conference calls. Lively, open-hearted discussions consider questions essential to our futures; sharing a meeting ground that is inclusive of all views; where we can come together to listen, speak, ask and learn -- without being forced to agree, change or bite our tongues.

Everyone is welcome.

UnityTalks are hosted using " Cafe" Style methods-- a way that allows everyone to feel heard and respected

Why talk?
Great changes are born in conversation.
We believe that Unity is the key to creating a world that works-- and a touchstone for unity is good communication.
Comm- Unity can save our World!
Link to Conversationcafe.com for mor on" "Why Talk? "-- what this can do for you, your community, and more.

Guidelines are:
Inclusive – all people and all perspectives welcome
Non-partisan – bring your views - but no lobbying for causes, candidates, movements or parties.
Respectful – having a host and "ground rules" will assure that everyone has a chance to be heard.
New – new people, new information, new ideas, new insights, new possibilities

Click here to join our email list now, and we'll keep you posted as things develop.

UnityTalks include the following elements for Good Conversations:

* Diversity – Friends, neighbors, co-workers, members of community groups, strangers. The idea is to involve both people who share similar views -- and people who don't.
* A structure –.A set beginning and ending time. usually 1- 1 1/2 hours.
* Fair sharing: a chance – at the start and at the end - for each person in the group to speak in turn. No interruptions. No feedback. Not speaking is okay, too.
* A Host who introduces the simple agreements and process, and keeps time.
* A Set of Agreements, including :

Open-mindedness: listen to and have patience with all points of view.

Acceptance: suspend judgement as best you can.
Curiosity: seek to understand rather than persuade.

Discovery: question old assumptions, look for new insights.

Sincerity: speak for yourself about what has personal heart and meaning.

Brevity: go for honesty and depth but don't go on and on.

To help participants stay at ease, curious and inviting, and keep the conversation interesting, Hosts may ask:

• (to open up interest & curiosity) Tell me more about…
• This is what I heard you say… is it what you meant?
• (if someone begins advocating for a fixed position) What led you to this point of view?
• (if someone begins campaigning for a candidate) What is most important you in a leader?
• (if there is agreement but little diversity) What if the opposite were true?

Who Attends

Each conversation is different-- and
we can choose how safe or adventurous we want to be... It can be a circle of friends, a few neighbors, the person next to you in the grocery line, a church group, a work group, or by phone.
Conversations can be with one other person, with 3, or ten …or more.

UnityTalks especially encourages diversity-- when people are comfortable with that--we invite others who think differently than we do – those we don't usually get to talk to about the questions that matter...

Most conversations will be hosted open to the public, inclusive of new participants each time.
If you are interested in hosting or joining in any of these conversations, email us at UnityTalks@UnityTalks.com
