601st Field Artillery Battalion (Pack) Battery "C"

The Battalion Insignia

The history of the 601st and 602nd Field Artillery is located on 12 different sites. This is the 12th, the most recent. As I receive new information, it will be posted here. The other 11 sites are each full to the brim with all the information and photo's you would ever want on these two very unique battalions.

This site contains information on Battery "C" of the 601st Field Artillery. Since 2001, when I first started my quest to build the history of the 601st, I had very little information on "C" battery. Just recently I was contacted by Randy Walters from Ohio. His Father-in-Law "Oscar Magee" was in "C" battery 1942 - 1945. Oscar took many photographs during the war and with the help of Randy, his wife Lennie (Oscar's daughter) we now have a pictorial of those men who served our country with valor. Sadly, Oscar passed away in 1985. Before and after the war Oscar was a carpenter, retiring in 1975 at the age of 56, due to a stroke. His wife Violet still survives in Ohio. "Thank You" Randy, Lennie & Violet for your help to make this website possible.

Pfc. Oscar Magee

The 601st and 602nd Battalions both trained at Camp Carson and Camp Hale, Colorado. The men arrived first at Camp Carson for basic training. The gear they were issued consisted of outdated WW I surplus. Once construction on Camp Hale was completed, the men hiked the 170 miles to that location, which was 9000' above sea level. The photos you are about to see were all taken from Oscar Magee's personal collection. I have arranged them in order from the early days at Carson, to Hale, the invasion of Kiska Island, the Italian front and onto the invasion of Southern France. As you view the photographs, pay close attention to the change in clothing and equipment as the fighting campaigns advance.
