August 1888 Arles On a summer morning in Provence, Vincent van Gogh went to a railroad yard in search of a subject to paint. He found one. A locomotive with men working. He had an unprimed linen canvas. The first attempt at a painting that day did not go well and Vincent scraped the paint off the canvas and decided to try another subject, railway carriages, over the first painting. Even Vincent probably did not notice that the oil from the painting he did first, bled through the unprimed canvas to the back of the painting where it remained unnoticed for the next 114 years. November 8, 2002 Using the oil stain as a guide, I have reconstructed the painting I call "Railway Locomotive at Arles" by Vincent van Gogh.
