Born June 23, 1965 in Bethesda, Maryland (part of the greater metropolitan Washington, DC area), Arnold Smith began his love affair with painting at age twelve. Inspired by a set of oil paints that were a gift from his father. He continued that inspiration over the next twenty-five years, and his brushes have not been idle. He continues to create oil paintings that reflect intense color and interesting perspectives.
One of Smith's greatest artistic influences is the artist, Vincent Van Gogh. Smith has maintained a life-long fascination with the life and works of Van Gogh, and has studied the artist's techniques with brushstroke and color. It is as if there were a "student/teacher" relationship between Smith and Van Gogh even though their lives are separated by over a hundred years! Smith says, "All the knowledge a person needs to be a good artist is contained in Vincent's letters and paintings".
Smith moved from his native Maryland, and after a few years living in the Pittsburgh, PA area, he relocated to Falling Waters, WV and has resided there since 1999.
