Sundog or rainbow ball or whatever you want to call them have quieted down in the West Texas panhandle. We used to see them on a regular basis but now for the past few years they've been pretty scarce.
However, if you keep a keen eye out you can occasionally catch one among the clouds as we've done here.

Bovina contrail report: I think this picture speaks for itself.
Note: The contrails have certainly diminished since 2001, however, we still occasionally experience them from time to time. There doesn't seem to be as much interest in them, at least not as much as people were expressing a few years ago.
Near miss or job well done? Just thought you might like to know your not going crazy.
Note: We were seeing this all throughout the late 90's. See below...
I don't know what's going on, but people are seeing this in our sky. So i'll report it here. I could fill a whole website with these images but I won't. People just want to know what's going on?
NO, THIS IS NOT THE SUN! It's a picture of a glowing cloud with a colorful sundog in it. And I have the video to prove it!
Out of all the mock suns we've witnessed in West Texas, this is probably the weirdest. As it was hiding behind the clouds as though it were a UFO.
Late this afternoon, we spotted this pink sundog mixed in the haze, just north of town. Later, we experienced a pink-purple sundown.
Note: Now, I don't know if this means anything. But the other day a photographer living in East Texas, captured an object in the sky I found most interesting. I guess it was its' color that first caught my eye. Viewing the photograph, (if you remove the trail) the object is about the same size, shape and color, as that of the Bovina sundog. We knew at the time the color of the "sundog" was rare; for we had never seen one that color before or since. Does make one wonder?
Photograph of the East Texas UFO
After going back and reviewing the video, (something that's not so easily done when you have hundreds of hours of video) I was absolutely shocked to discover that when we first spotted the Bovina sundog. It was leaving a TRAIL!!!
Note: I also discovered we had the date wrong on the first webpage entry? It had become our practice to turn off the timestamp when filming sundogs because the stamp tends to mess with the background colors. However, I'm still at a loss, as to how we arrived at May, instead of September?
Sorry about that.
Interesting photograph from Canada
Here you see (with the help of the timestamp) where in only a few moments the trail completely vanished. Actually, when shooting this video we missed that little but most important detail? Perhaps it was, we were too busy turning off the timestamp?!
(Thank God, it takes a few seconds for the time stamp to actually turn off, otherwise, we'd not have this record.)
It's being hotly debated right now, whether or not, the trail is made up of vapor, or that of a beam of light? The mere fact the trail disappeared so abruptly, only tends to support the 'beam of light' hypothesis.
Either way, this sundog is anomalous so i'll have to drop this video in the UFO basket, for the time being.
I ran a Google search and too my surprise. I discovered people all around the globe were seeing & photographing pink sky-oddities. I also came across recent "beams of light" UFO reports.
Note: The reports below, in no way represent all the pink sky-oddities photographed in 2005, or 06. They're only a few, but compelling cases
I gleaned from UFO Casebook, in order to make a point.
2006 - (Classified?), California, New Mexico, New Zealand, South America, Mexico, Italy, Virginia, Tennessee...
2005 - United Kingdom, Chile, Argentina, Central America, Mexico, Acapulco, Arizona, Califorina, Oregon, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina...
It seems September was a great month for pink odd-balls.
Is this a pink odd-ball, in focus?
We didn't think much of this video at the time. However, after reviewing the video archives we found pink odd-balls turning up everywhere!
Here's a pink odd-ball I captured sitting above a line of clouds just north of town. I was at the time trying to focus the camera on another object. However, the camera started focusing on this object. At that moment the object suddenly dropped down in front of the clouds making its' luminosity more apparent. I can't help but think, had I not been using a camera, I might not have seen this object above the clouds?
In this capture the object is diving down and away from the camera. It's at this moment I realized the object was moving. It appears as though the object knew it was being watched because it then darted down into the clouds and vanished. See below...
What is it with these pink sky-oddities? Almost every time one turns up I experience difficulties with the camera!
At this point, I began backing off on the zoom and started trying to acquire the new target. However, the object moved very quickly, (making it hard to keep up with) before it went behind the cloud bank. This all transpired in a matter of seconds.
Very strange indeed!
Late this afternoon, we spotted this rainbow ball north of town. Little did we know that in a few minutes this aerial display would become so dramatic.
This is about what we expected. However, as I filmed, the light show kept getting brighter and brighter. See below...
It's moments like these that make up for all those countless hours of skywatching.
Look closely, see anything unusual? The other day a collegue of mine pointed out what he believes is a large dark cylindrical-shaped object directly behind the ball of light. He claims a portion of the object can be plainly seen sticking out the left side of the sundog.
Perhaps this is just another case of "Bunnies in the Clouds" or what some call "the eye of the beholder." But who knows perhaps there's something to it?

NO, THIS IS NOT THE SUN HIDING BEHIND A CLOUD! It's a true to life glowing cloud.
