Badly Burned
In Home Fire
Otis W. Slusher, 52, and his son,
Robert, 12, were in fair condition in
St. Vincent Charity Hospital suffer-
ing from burns sustained in a $2,
000 fire at their home, 1720 E. 47th
St.
Seven other members of the fam-
ily gained safety after Patrolman
Brendan Healy and Joseph Balusc-
sak, driving past in a zone car, saw
the fire, broke down the front door,
and routed the occupants of the home.
Robert, who had been escorted
outside by the policemen, realized
his father still was inside the burn-
ing building, and returned with
Patrolman Healy and Baluscsak to
find him.
They found Slusher overcome and
while carrying him to an exit, Rob-
ert was overcome by smoke and
had to be lifted through a window
to safety.
Others who fled the flames in-
cluded Donald, 17; George, 15; Jack,
11, and Nancy Susher, 9; a son-in-
law of Slusher, James Stander, 25,
his wife and their 15-month-old son.
Mrs. Esther Slusher, 39, has been
missing from the home since Oc-
tober 18, when she wrote her hus-
band and children a letter saying
she "couldn't stand it any longer".
