My KERSLAKE Connection

My KERSLAKE Connection

1. John KERSLAKE b abt 1824/25 in England (age 45 in 1870 census) - Immigrated to the USA in Sep 1853 - Living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, by 14 Oct 1853 - On 20 Sep 1864, John purchased a lot of 12 gravesites at the East Cleveland Cemetery, Cuyahoga Co. OH - John signed an oath of allegience to the USA on 13 Feb 1868 in Cuyahoga Co., OH, as a step toward obtaining U.S. citizenship - Living in East Cleveland Twp., Cuyahoga Co., OH, by 7 June 1870 - occ (1870): Blacksmith - d on ? (aft June 1870 and bef 14 Aug 1873) in ? (prob in/near Cuyahoga Co, OH) - John is said to have died in an accident at the Streator Sand Quary, on top of Cedar Hill, Cuyahoga Co., OH - bu ? - m abt 1852 England to Ann "Anne" "Anna" "Annie" WHITNAL, d/o ? & ? - Ann b abt 1831/32 England (age 38 in 1870 census) - d on 14 Aug 1873 East Cleveland, OH - bu ? - Ann is blvd to have remarried as Cuyahoga Co., OH, Probate Court records, dated 7 Apr 1888, state that she died on 14 Aug 1873, and "died leaving a husband who is now deceased", thus her apparent 2nd husband died after 14 Aug 1873 and bef 7 Apr 1888.

NOTE: The informant on John KERSLAKE's son, Edward Hooker KERSLAKE's 3 Apr 1942 death certificate was Edward's son-in-law, Howard Arthur BOND. Howard named Edward's mother as "Mary HOOKER" on the death certificate. This led this researcher to believe that John KERSLAKE had married a "Mary HOOKER" sometime before son Edward's birth, and that "Mary HOOKER" was not only son, Edward's, mother, but also the mother of son, Edward's, younger brother, Frederick "Fred" Robert KERSLAKE. As evidenced by the 1870 East Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, census of the household of John KERSLAKE, which also contained his wife Anne and all 8 children, it is now believed that Howard Arthur BOND was poss in error re the name of Edward's mother as "Mary HOOKER" and that all 8 of John KERSLAKE's children were born to John KERSLAKE and poss his "only" wife, Ann/Anne/Anna/Annie WHITNAL? - The true birth mother of Edward and Frederick is again uncertain???

NOTE: According to info provided to me by Tom KERSLAKE, when Fred KESLAKE (see #7 below) married his 2nd wife, Jennie L. (BREDENTHAL) KACKLEY on 9 May 1929 in Cuyahoga Co., OH, the county marriage records name Fred's father as John and his mother as "Mary" //not as Anna!// - Even further evidence that both Edward Hooker KERSLAKE's and Frederick "Fred" Robert KERSLAKE's mother was, indeed, "Mary HOOKER"

NOTE (PURE SPECULATION ONLY): Perhaps John KERSLAKE's wife was actually named something like Mary Ann (or Ann Mary) WHITNAL and that Mary Ann (or Ann Mary) (nee WHITNAL) KERSLAKE did remarry (after John KESLAKE's death) to a _____ HOOKER and Mr. HOOKER died btwn 14 Aug 1873 and 7 Apr 1888, which would explain why it took the KERSLAKE offspring, nearly 15 years to file claim in Probate Court re her Real Estate.

NOTE: Hiers of Ann KERSLAKE sold the real estate (lot Number 421 on Shaker Road containing 1 and 6/100 acres) to to Smith H. Rand in Apr 1889 for $825.00.

NOTE: Per East Cleveland Cemetery records, in Sep 1937 "Heirs of John Kerslake" sold the westerm half of the lot (6 gravesites) to T. R. (Rafter) for $180.00.

Re the remaining 6 KERSLAKE gravesites (graves A-F) records/tombtones identify the following as buried in the graves:

A: Milton Peck (no year of burial recorded)
B: Carrie Peck (Interment July 23, 1936)
C: "Casper Ham." (buried 1931)
D: Apparently someone buried there - identity unknown
E. Unknown if used?
F. Uknown person buried there - grave has 1800's vintage head stone (3" white limestone) broken off at the base.

6. NOTE: There is much confusion as to Edward Hooker KERSLAKE's actual year of birth - see the following:

1870 Census: Age 3 (& younger than sister Celia, then age 4)
1880 Census: Age 12 (& younger that sister Celia, then age 14)
1930 Census: Age 65
DOB on 3 Apr 1942 death certificate: 31 Mar 1865 (age 77 years & 3 days)

Edward's ages in the 1870 & 1880 censuses indicate a birth in abt 1867 - By the 1930 census, Edward "picked-up" a couple of years and was by then enumerated as being born abt 1865 - It is believed by this researcher may have been born on "31 March" but surely after "1865" (very poss in 1867?).

NOTE (PURE SPECULATION): As Edward married in 1890 to Fanny HERBERT, b 30 Sep 1860 and poss as much as 7 years his senior, Edward may have added a few years to his age to appear closer to his wife's age and this revised year of birth of (1865) stuck and is reflected in the 1930 census (age 65 - she recorded then as 68) and 1865 is also found on his 1942 death certificate.

NOTE: On the 9 May 1929 marriage document, Jennie's father is named as "Henry" BREIDENTHAL - On her 12 Feb 1965 death certificate, her father is named as "John" BREIDENTHAL. Suspect that his name was either "John Henry" or "Henry John".

NOTE: There is a question as to the actual date of birth of Frederick "Fred" Robert KERSLAKE:

a.The 1870 Census (enumerated on 7 Jun 1870) shows his age as "8/12" (8 months) indicating a birth abt Oct? 1869.

b. The 1880 Census (date of enumeration unknown) shows his age as "10" years indicating a birth in 1869 or early 1870 and surely before 1871 (see "d." below). Also the fact that he was living with his 25 y/o brother, William KERSLAKE, surely indicates that borth of his perents were deceased by 1880.

c. His 9 May 1929 Cuyahoga Co., OH, marriage document of his 2nd marriage, to Jennie L. (nee BREIDENTHAL) KACKLEY (then divorced), gives his age as 58 years and names his father as "John" and his as "Mary".

d. His 2 May 1946 Ohio death certificate gives his date of birth as 15 Mar 1871 and his age of death as 75 years & 17 days, which has to be in error as that date is after the date of the enumeration of the census on 7 Jun 1870 and as her was on the 7 Jun 1870 census surely prooves that he was born before 7 June 1870.

NOTE (SPECULATION ONLY): On the 1870 census, the "8" in "8/12" appears to be heavily over marked on the census page as if darkened by the enumerater - This researcher suspects that the origional recording of "3/12" (3 months) may have be darkened in error to "8/12" (8 months) and Fredericks acutual date of birth to poss be 15 Mar 1870.
