2. John Charles "Charly"/"Charlie" (Lee?) MONTGOMERY b __ Jan 1845 _____, TN - Living Sumner Co. TN, as a child & teen in 1850 & 1860 - He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 1 Jun 1861 at Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY, and served in Co. G, First Regiment Infantry, Kentucky Volunteers - Promoted to 1st Corporal on ? - Promoted to 5th Sargeant on 4 Jan 1962 - At some point while near "Old Fort Hill", Fountain Head, Sumner Co., TN, he dragged logs and helped to build forts for the Southern Army in the War Between the States. He assisted in building this fort and others. He was hunchedbacked and is said to have said [to his daughter, Frances/Francis Cleveland (MONTGOMERY) JORDAN] that it was the result of a log being dragged over him while he was building forts for the South and that his feet were broken in the same way. He was also said to have told of his spying for the Southern Army - "old Fort Hill", so called, was Fort Mitchel, Sumner Co., TN, Camp Trousdale, located in Sumner Co., TN, near Richland Station - Date/place of his discharged and/or paroll (end of service) in unknown - Was living Sumner Co. TN, in 1870,. 1880 & 1900 - occ (1900): Day Laborer - Family lore is while seeking work that he died circa 1903? in another state (was said to poss be Georgia?) while reparing old slave quarters for a Mr. JORDAN, father of his daughter Frances' future husband, Miles Elkin JORDAN. It is said that Charly died there and was buried in a small cemetery that was flooded and "washed out to sea" in a Hurricaine.
