PELHAM CAMP #258 UPCOMING MEETINGS & PROJECTS

CLEANUP AT CITY CEMETERY AND SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR APRIL , 2004!!!

April 22nd, 2004= 5:30 pm, Jacksonville City Cemetery, Several Compatriots gathered at the cemetery to spruce it up for our services. Compatriots John Reece, Wesley Reece, Josh Doggrell, Gerald Thrasher, Troy Evans, Randy Wiggins and Bill Daniel were in attendance to help clean up for our services. It was noted that a lot of work needs to be done in the cemetery beyond regular maintainence.

April 24th, 2004= Confederate Memorial Services in Jacksonville started at 1:00 pm at Gen. William H. Forney's grave in the City Cemetery, and a short service at General John H. Forney's grave by the General William H. Forney Chapter of the U.D.C. of Anniston. Our services started at 2:00 pm-Confederate Rest with our speaker being Pelham Camp member and Past C-I-C of the S.C.V., Dr. Norman R. Dasinger, Sr., 3:00 pm- Major John Pelham's grave, and 3:30 pm- on the Jacksonville City Square for the final memorial and singing of "Dixie" by all. We had both rifle and cannon salutes at the memorials in the cemetery. Just rifles at the square, as cannon echos can break shop windows! Wreaths were laid at all sites.

April 26th, 2004- 10:00 am at the Alabama State Capital Building in Montgomery. Rededication of the Confederate Monument on the north side of the building. This monument's
cornerstone was laid by President Jefferson Davis. It has been in the process of being restored for over 10 years and is finally finished. This was ON Confederate Memorial Day!! Compatriots Josh Doggrell, Bill Rozier and Bill Daniel attended this historical ceremony. Governor Bob Riley gave a stirring address, and the attendance was around 500 people. As it was raining, most of the service was held in the auditorium of the Capitol building. A standing room only situation existed in the 300+ seat auditorium. Bertram Hayes Davis (direct descendant of President Jefferson F. Davis) was present and addressed the crowd also. The last part of the ceremony took place at the monument, where Governor Riley and Mr. Davis placed a wreath at the foot of the monument.

MARCH 2004 MEETING IN JACKSONVILLE!!!

The Pelham Camp #258, S.C.V., met at 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 11th, 2004 at the Hiram Masonic Lodge just north of the square in Jacksonville, Alabama. We had as our guest speaker Calhoun County Commissioner James "Eli" Henderson, who spoke on Janney Furnace and it's significance to Calhoun County's history. Be sure to be at this meeting to hear about future plans for the Confederate memorial there, the park itself and a new Confederate attraction to be added soon!

Items of business discussed will be a raffle of a reproduction Confederate sword (donated by 2nd Lt. Commander Robert P. Jordan) for the scholarship fund, plans for our roadblock to be held on April 3rd, our April meeting, our Confederate Memorial Service set for April 24th, Confederate History Month (which is April), and the upcoming Alabama Division Reunion set for May 7th & 8th in Bessemer. Confederate History Month posters were distributed to Compatriots to be placed in local schools and businesses.

The Camp approved a table and participation in the Cleburne Day Celebration in Heflin on March 20th.

MAJOR JOHN PELHAM CAMP #258, S.C.V. MEETING FOR FEBRUARY, 2004.

Compatriots and Friends;

Our meeting this month was held on Thursday, February 12th, 2004 at 7:00 pm at the Hiram Masonic Lodge in Jacksonville. The speaker was our own 1st Lt. Commander Randy Wiggins and the subject was The Major Battles Of The War In Alabama. Randy gave a great presentation of this rarely discussed topic. The meeting was enjoyed by a fair amount of Pelham Camp Compatriots and guests.

Plans for our participation in the March 20th, 2004 Patrick Cleburne Day Celebration in Heflin were announced. This event will include a parade this year. Confederates are needed in uniform for this parade. The Camp will have a table for recruitment and fundraising at this important area event.

We also discussed plans for our Confederate Memorial service and for the month of April, which is Confederate History and Heritage Month in the State of Alabama. This is THE most important event that we put on annually for ourselves and the public. Bring yourselves and your ideas to the March meeting for this event. Our Confederate Memorial Day Program will be held at 2:00 pm on April 24th, 2004 starting at Confederate Rest in the Jacksonville City Cemetery.

Also discussed was a fundraiser/roadblock for our Pelham Camp Scholarship program. We currently have $700.00 in our account for this fund, and we need $300.00 or more so we can award two $500.00 scholarships to worthy Calhoun County Seniors this spring. The roadblock will be held on Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 at the intersection of White's Gap Road and Cottaquilla Road in front of White's Gap Baptist Church from 8:30 am til 1:30 pm.

Our Camp is starting out in fairly good shape this year of 2004 with most Compatriots renewing their dues. If you know of a prospective member or an old one that needs to reinstate his dues, make sure to bring them to our next meeting.

Our March meeting will be held on March 11th, 2004 at the Hiram Masonic Lodge, with County Commissioner Eli Henderson giving the program.

We discussed the Hunley Burial to be held in Charleston, S.C. on April 17th, 2004. Not much interest in getting a bus trip to this event was shown, so we will have to discuss this with other local Camps.
