THE TONKINESE
The Tonkinese are often referred to as a " man-made breed ", however one might argue that they were developed from a naturally occuring hybrid. Tonkinese breeders, like the Burmese, trace their origins back to Wong Mau. She was a small walnut colored cat brought to California by Dr. Joseph Thompson in 1930. Some people believe that the Golden Siamese of the 1880's were actually Tonkinese.
Between 1950 & 1970 the breed was introduced again by crossing the Siamese with the Burmese. The Canadian Cat Association was the first to accept the Tonkinese into their association. In 1984 the Cat Fanciers Association accepted them into Championship in their association. The Tonkinese have been bred only to Tonkinese for many, many years.
The Tonkinese are known for their wonderful personalities. They have the curiosity and intelligence of the Siamese, and the voice and personality traits of the Burmese. They are not a one-person cat. They have never met a stranger. When company comes, they think they have come to see them. They have alot of dog-like qualities. They love to play fetch and want to inter-act in every aspect of your life. They are very social but not high-strung. They love to cuddle and be loved. They are not an aggerssive cat and get along well with adults, children, dogs, other cats, and sometimes birds. They love to jump to your shoulders and ride around the house. They are true shoulder-cats.
The Tonkinese have very sleek, silky close lying coats. They come in 4 colors: Natural (Seal ), Blue, Champagne (Chocolate ), & Platinum
(Lilac). The 4 colors come in 3 patterns: Minks with aqua eyes, Points with blue eyes, and Solids with Chartruese Green eyes. They are not considered to be a large cat but are very heavilly muscled. You are supposed to be surprised how heavy they are when you pick them up. The Tonkinese are a very long-lived cat, and not prone to alot of the health problems of other breeds. No matter what color, pattern, or male or female, they all have the same endearing personalities. They are a loving companion for all ages.
My husband and I have been lucky enough to have been owned by the Tonks for over 23 years. We love all cats, but the Tonks have spoiled us. We do not cage our cats. They all live underfoot with us in the house. They love to sleep with us. Our cats come from Grand Champion, Regional and National Winner bloodlines. We breed for health and personality first and foremost. We don't like to ship our babies but will deliver or meet people half-way to get their babies to them. Following are a few pictures of some of our family. We hope you enjoy them.
