The American Animal Hospital Association National Pet Owner Survey turned up some interesting results about pet owners and their day-to-day interaction with their pets.

For Example:


Two-thirds of pet owners say that they take their pet to a veterinarian more than they see their own physician.


63 percent celebrate their pet's birthday.


72 percent of married respondents greet their pet before their spouse when they return home.


84 percent refer to themselves as their pet's "Mom or Dad".

About 60 percent of all households in the United States have a pet.

About 53 milion dogs and about 59 million cats are owned in the United States.

About 65 percent of pet owners acquire their pets free or at low cost.#

The cost of basic food, supplies, medical care and training for a pet is anywhere from $100 to $600 annually.#

23 percent of people acquire their cats as strays; 23 percent of people who leave dogs in shelters - have adopted dogs in shelters.#
