KEYBOARD & REMOTE REPAIR

This works for malfuntioning remotes as well as keyboards.

Remove batteries
Press each key a couple of times
Wait an hour
Insert NEW Alkaline batteries
Re-enter codes to control TV (see WebTV help)

If still not working, repeat above but wait 24 hours before reinstalling batteries.

I've seen this work on totally dead remotes.

If it doesn't work for yours, check this site.

http://www.eio.com/repairfaq/REPAIR/F_irrfaq.htm

Try the dead remote routine:

http://www.remotes.com/newlife.htm

POWER_OFF CODES

Here are a few more of what are called "Power Off" codes, because you do it when the WebTV is shut off.

CAUTION:

These codes are relatively safe;
There are other codes which clear your box account and try to force an upgrade, also ruining your box, among other things... don't try to use them even if you can find them.

Press Options 2 or 3 times, then enter the following numbers; Watch the red, yellow, and green lights, they should all flash when you've entered the last number:

217 DIALING OPTIONS

411 TECHNICAL INFORMATION

77437 OBSCURE DIALING OPTIONS

90210 WEBTV TOUR

Then power up.

STATUS BOARD

http://developer.webtv.net/status_board/stat.html

REMOTE PROGRAMMING

I tried to program my Sony remote that came with the INT-150, to work with my PM 965, and had no luck.

It was surprising that it wasn't interchangeable, like keyboards are.

Possible problem: keyboard and/or remote have lost (or never had) set-up code needed to control certain functions on your TV.

1. Go to Web home page
2. Choose HELP
3, Scroll down to "Equipment" on right hand side
4. Under "Equipment" choose KEYBOARD
5. Follow the links (mostly the 1st choice on each screen) till you reach the screen that offers to SET UP KEYBOARD.
6. Follow the prompts to put code in keyboard. If the first code for your TV doesn't work, you'll be presented with more codes to try.

Hope you problem turns out to be something easy-to-fix, like this.

The keyboard codes can now be found in the help section.

CONTROLS NOT WORKING

The options for volume up/down and
mute and tv on/off just stopped working
for the keyboard.

I checked batteries etc...and all is
good...what I dont get is that the channel changer works on the keyboard..

Does it have anything to do with the
codes? I dont think so because then it
would affect the channel changer button
as well..

First thing to check is whether the TV/WebTV switch is set to WebTV... If it is, the codes may need to be re-set.

The test to see if the keyboard has been programmed correctly is to use the volume up/down.

Other functions may work with the "default" setting of the keyboard.

To get to the code-setting procedure,
click on Help from the Web homepage,
then on Keyboard setup [under Tips and Tricks], then follow the prompts.
Hope this helps,
Saverio

PROGRAMMING THE KEYBOARD

To program the keyboard to operate your TV, follow these steps.

Slide the TV/WebTV switch to TV.

Find the brand of your TV on the list below.

Press the Code Set button, and hold it down for six seconds.

Use the Number buttons to enter the three-digit code for your brand of TV.

Press the return button.

Slide the TV/WebTV switch back to WebTV.

To see if the keyboard operates your TV, press the Power (TV) button.

If the TV turns on or off, the Keyboard successfully operates the TV.

Now, you may adjust the volume, mute the volume, or change TV channels using the keyboard.

NOTE:

Your TV brand may have more than one code listed. Try each code until the keyboard successfully operates your TV.

NOTE:

When you remove the batteries from the keyboard, you may need to reprogram the keyboard.

BROWSER

A "browser analyzer" does just that. It analyzes -your- browser...telling you everything that is on -your- browser. Here's a site that has an analyzer. Just click on the box at the upper left hand corner and scroll down to read all about your browser.

http://privacy.net/

When you log onto this site, it will give you -your- IP address and pertinent personal info at the top of the page. Then, when you click on the box, it will diagnose all the info contained in your browser. Have fun :-)

CODES

By now, some folks are confused as to whether they have the 2.5... the
2.5.5 or the 2.6 upgrade/updates.

Go to spellcheck and put &vers;
on your word list.

I did, and got:
2.6 Internal-nondebug

Define nondebug???

Client 2.5.5 External-Nondebug (version 7351)

With your unit off press options 3 times followed by numbers 4 11 All the lights will flash on your unit
power on (you will be on your box tech specs page) Each and every upgrade has a build or version number. Its easier to identify a upgrade by build number

A Debug version is one that has yet to be debugged; it can be an alpha or beta version that's still in testing..

A Nondebug version is one that is [we all hope!] debugged and OK to release for use.
Hope this helps,
Saverio (Los Angeles, CA)

HARD TO REACH SITES AFTER UPGRADE

The webmaster is checking the browser name rather than the version and redirecting based upon that.

If you email the webmaster and let them know WebTv has been upgraded, and that they should use a browser version sniffer rather than an appName sniffer, they will gain all the WebTv community as a result of it as visitors!

I send Speedtrap a email and explain that our browser is Mozilla/4.0 WebTV/2.6 (compatible; MSIE 4.0).
Their addy is:

SpeedTrap@speedtrap.com

Plus need to report to webtv as well.

SETUPS

Taping Websites

Does anyone know if it's possible to run a webtv through a VCR for the purpose
of taping websites?

Yup, just run the wires from the back of your webtv into the 'input' on your vcr, and the vcr out to the tv in the normal way. When you record, just like taping a tv show, whatever you see onscreen is what you'll be taping!
HTH,
Zoob :)

It IS possible! You can tape dialing in, a surfing session, writing HTML or ANYTHING!
Thank you this is amazing!
~Ronnie~

To record from the web---just connect the audio/video cables (RCA type cables) from the output of the webtv unit to to the audio/video inputs of the VCR. After you connect anything into a VCR always try out some buttons on the VCR REMOTE.
Buttons like: "tv/vcr" and "input" and "line" and "line in" etc or whatever it has got.

COMBINATION TV/VCR SETUP

[Can I hook up my web tv unit to a tv vcr combination set? .]

Yes you can.

However, you will not be able to program the combo VCR through the LLB. You have to program it as usual.

I have my LLB into a regular VCR, then into my combo. I can record what I see on the web and also use the 2 VCR's to duplicate tapes. ~Del

TRAVEL WITH WEBTV

Here's some tricks also from a webtver, James...good ones to remember:
----
{QUOTE}

I have recently joined the successful ranks of those who have travelled with their WebTVs.
Before I went on my trip, I found this site very useful --(Saverio's
site)

http://community-2.webtv.net/IOM/doc5/
-
However, I discovered 5 more tricks that you might want to try out when you are on the road, too.
----
(1) When you are not using your WebTV, leave the phone line unplugged.     In case you forget to turn off the automatic features ( I did! , it will prevent the unit from dialing out for TV listings or mail retrieval.
----
(2) When you are at a hotel, you may want to retrieve the local TV listings.
I found TV Search very useful when I was trying to find my favorite syndicated programs. I also discovered some local shows that were not broadcast in my area.
The WebTV listings are far better than depending on a hotel info channel (if any), or a small TV section in the newspaper, or even a TV Guide.
------
(3) Even if you are not using it, leave your settings on TV Home.     That way, it will prevent the unit from dialing out until you are ready.
If you are not connected to TV cable, you may want to mute the TV sound or leave the audio disconnected until you are ready.
------
(4) When you first see the "Have You Moved?", be sure to reply YES, whether you are using your own ISP or WebTV ISP. For your own ISP, a "Yes" response will
take you to your settings, including your dial-in numbers.
By the way, set up your dial-in numbers
just as if you were making a local call. For instance, my hotel phone needed a 9 and 1 and even an area code.
And local calls were 75 cents each, even for unconnected dial-outs.
-------
(5) If you are going to a hotel, bring your own TV.     I have discovered recently that very few hotels have easy access to their cable systems. Unless you are lucky enough to get a helpful hotel technician, you will be left out in the cold. Don't depend on the front desk for any technical information either.
------
For a while, I would bring my 13 inch TV. ( This was also useful since I brought my VCR, too. ) All I needed was a box to carry the set.
------
Now, I have another option: I-Glasses.
These are basically miniature TV screens and ear plugs mounted on special googles. They can be easily packed with your luggage. ( You can find info and pricing on I-Glasses at www.technoscout.com . ) My I-Glasses will be especially useful whenever I plan to travel by air, and need to limit my luggage.
I hope you find all this useful....

SWITCH BOXES ON VACATION

"You mentioned msntv does "box
switches" for vacations. Please could
you give us more information on that?
Interesting, as I never knew that. Does it involve any add'l charges?"

No, no additional charges.

If you're going to a vacation or summer/winter home where you have *another* WebTV box, you can call 1-800-gowebtv and have them make a switch for the period you'll be there.

It de-activates your other box, just as if you were buying a new box and switching the account over to it.

Then, when you go back to your [first] home, you do the same thing and switch back to that box.

It's an alternative to just taking your WebTV with you.

Personally, I think it's easier to just have one box and carry it with you, but some people prefer to have another box, already set up, in each location, and just do the box switch.

I've travelled with mine so many times I can do the hookups blindfolded, but for others it's a major headache to disconnect and reconnect, I guess!
