Url Tips

WAITING POP-UP

I noticed this about 3 years ago. When the globe spins till it say's "Pub. kept ya waiting", hit "Return" (it'll be on 'continue') immediately, then jump on the url again. 80% of the time, it will hook up in 5 -15 seconds.

I've advised that to lots of folks, and they all agree it works. No, I can't explain why, but it does.

Again, this is more pronounced since the 2.6.... maybe more noticable
'cause the globe is a lot more abrupt now too.

ANYBROWSER

I have had sites that wouldn't work for me, I then tried www.anybrowser.com and inserted the URL and the site works fine. You might want to give this a try,

BALKY URLS

Sometimes a site has a front page with stuff on it which makes our box power off, or they have designed their site for Netscape or Explorer browsers and think their site won't look good unless we use those browsers, so they put up a page blocking other browsers. Often, you can find a way past these blocking pages. First, the easiest thing to try is to put the balky URL into the www.northernlight.com search engine. It may show other pages in the site right away. If not, look in the blue folders on the left side for one labled with the URL in question for a list of inner pages. I like the NorthernLight search engine for this because of those blue folders. Also, some other search engines may ignore the ".com" when you enter a URL, or it may only bring up pages with the URL in the text of the page.

Now, to Madrabbit. If the above gets nothing, you can enter the URL into a source viewer, such as

This uses the source viewer at www.thunderstone.com to show the HTML code of the page. I usually just look around at random for other URLs. If you want to be more systematic, you can use the "find" key.
Try using the find key to find the word "site" in case the site has a ''sitemap" page. Look for ".htm" since pages end in ".htm" or ".html". Sometimes "nav" will get a navigation bar with links to other pages.

With luck you will find a page with links to other pages in the site, which you can use.

When you find a URL, you have to copy&paste it into the address box (press the "go to" key).

It's just a matter of trial and error at that point. If you put the source viewer on a F-key, or get it into your "recents," then when you go to it, it will have the URL of the last page you were on already in the text input box.

There are many other source viewers made by Webtv'ers. Most, but not all, use the Thunderstone viewer.

Sometimes they get called "validators," but validators really are something else -- they check for HTML errors, but also show the HTML source code.

Well, that's about all I know about getting into sites. If someone knows about dealing with sites with a lot of javascript, or style sheets, maybe they will add to this.

Thank you for posting this Ellen:

http://www.capnfila.com/SV/SiteViewer.cgi

This is the best one I've seen myself, I really like that I put it on an F-Key and when I'm on a web site all I have to do is press the F-Key and the site puts the URL in the boxes for source, pictures, and sound, and even has a transload, or scrapbook uploader for each picture or sound. There may be better ones but not that i've seen, I will get a lot of use out of this one, thanks again for posting the URL!

LINK PROBLEMS

Here's a trick that will sometimes solve linking problems:

After clicking on link, immediately click 'back', if you are too late, click 'continue',
Click...'go-to'... click... 'show last'...
Type two question marks  ??  at the end of the URL....
click...'go to page'....
In the case of Jerry's post, the url would look like this:
.
http://www.geocities.com/webwizardsways/midis/internettonight.wav??

URL BACKUP

I love this trick - you can find wonderful surprises as you back up. No doubt many of you are familiar with this, but it's always a lot of fun. Take this URL:

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/5565/help3.html

Click on it and you will see it is a cooking site with Quick Keys. Hit your Go To button, scroll down to Show Current and click on Return. You will see the above URL.

With the Delete key, back up to the first slash / just before help3 - click on Go To Page, and you will find yourself on Lucille's Country Home.

It is so much fun to experiment with URLs - no telling what you will find in front of each slash.

CAN'T FIND

Kara849 revealed the following trick to me when you get the cannot-find-the-page error message.

Click Continue to get rid of the pop-up. Press your GoTo key then click Show Last. With the url in the box, delete the unfound page (delete back to the first /.) Press Return and you are taken to the previous part of a site because you deleted the page you were on. Sometimes you need to repeat the process, taking away more pages. Each page is separated by the /.

Sometimes there is a link on a prior page stating that the page has been moved. Or after deleting a page, you could even find the home site. It's amazing what may show up when you delete each section up to the /

The thread "404" reminds me of my using Ctrl+Cmd to get the URL of a RAM to see if it belonged to the owner of the page I was on or was from somewhere else.

Turns out it was another source. So I clipped off the "name" of the RAM and got an index with whole bunches of neat RAMs and images. Then I started going back and back (using the Parent Directory) but saving the index just in case. I ended up with the Library of Congress "American Memories" site!

The URL is: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ Ya never know where doing that stuff will take you!

COLLECTING URLS WITH GO TO

You can copy and paste a URL.... while on the website, you use your "go to" feature and put the cursor on "show Current" which will fill in the GO TO box. Then you would hold down your CMD key and hit the A and C keys. That puts the URL into your memory.

Now you can paste it where you want, on an email or website by holding down the CMD key and LIGHTLY TAP the V key.

MULTIPLE URLS?

Is it possible, with the use of the "go to" feature, to capture more than one URL in the box at the same time? I would then like to cut and paste all of them _at one time_ to an Email!

Yes … it's possible to capture more than one URL, at a time. Don't know how many … but, I've done as many as 32, at a time.

Here's how …
Copy & cut the first URL.
Bring up the next one.
Place a comma, at the end of it … leave a space.
Paste the first one.
Copy & cut those two.
Repeat … till you've got 'em all.
Copy, cut & paste, to your e-mail.

There are other methods, but Tyhart's instructions are easy to follow:

ANOTHER USE

Let me tell you another fantastic use of the "Go To" key.

Let's say you're visiting a site, and see some text which you would like to quote elsewhere. But you would also like to "take" the URL with you when you go. Use c/c/p to copy the text first, then press the Go To key.
When the popup comes up, click on "Show Current." The URL will be displayed in the box.

Now, press the spacebar once, then use CMD + V to "paste" the copied text into the box, right along with the URL. You can now use CMD + A, then CMD+C to copy BOTH the URL, AND the pasted text which came from that webpage.

Now, you can go to any "Write" screen, such as email or posting to a newsgroup, and use CMD+V to paste the info to the Write screen.

The URL will be pasted first, but you can always use c/c/p once again to "edit" and place the URL _after_ the quoted text.
As Always,
Tex

URL AT BOTTOM

I have seen this in posts. But _how_ is it done? The posts I'm talking about have a paragraph or 2 from the site in question.
The post has the URL pasted at the bottom.

Once the text is copied into the buffer _how_ do you snatch the URL _without_ deleting the previous text??

The Very Savvy Saverio wrote:

1. Go to article, Use Find to highlight first few words of the passage you want, then highlight [shift + arrow or Scroll keys] and copy [Cmd-c] the part you want

2. Press GoTo, Show Current; Cmd-left arrow to position cursor to left of URL; add a few spaces as desired

3. Cmd-v to paste text to left of URL

4. Press Return; you will get an error
message, but this will store the URL

5. Later, when on page to post, press GoTo, Show Last, Cmd-a, Cmd-c to copy

6. Insert text with Cmd-v; you will need to add paragraph spacing with Returns, as
everything will be "bunched up" from being in the GoTo buffer.

(Only nitpick, for me it's easier to use cmd A, C instead of return at step 4 so that all info is copied into memory. Then just go to posting page and cmd V.)

Clickable and Scrapbook Urls

To make "clickable links use this code:

a href="Put the URL of your link here">Click here! /a>

The only spaces in this are between the opening "a" and "href" AND between "Click" and "here".

Also, where I have "Click here", you can put any text you want and it will show up as a clickable link. (Be sure to replace the <'s)

Be sure to enclose the code with html> and /html>. In case that doesn't show up ... put html surrounded by and > in front of the code, and /html surrounded by and > at the end of the code.

You can also use an image for your clickable link this way:

a href="Put the URL of your link here"> img src="Url of the image you want folks to click on">Click here! /a>

Again, spacing rules and html and /html apply as above. (Be sure to replace the <'s)
.
To give your scrapbook images urls, go to page builder and click on create.
You need a page to put your images on. I use the gray background but that can be changed to one that appeals to you. Name your page something short because it will be part of the image url. something like "images" or "pix".

Go to the page and press "add an item", choose "picture", click on "from scrapbook".

You will be taken to your scrapbook, click on the image of your choice. Then click on "view this image", it will be on the screen and in the status bar will be something like importD0_gif. that's a zero, not an o.

Go back to the image page and type the name in changing the _ to a . (period).
(I type the importD name in the title bar and the url info in the text box.

Then type in the whole name of the gif:

http://community.webtv.net/yourusername/images/scrapbookFiles/importD0.gif

Remember when you write scrapbookFiles the F is capitalized. If you have capitals in your user name be sure to write it the same way.

Now be sure to publish this page, otherwise the gif won't show up on your PB page.

When you want to use the image, just click on the url you typed, copy it in your "go to" box and you're set to paste it wherever you want. Saves having to type it each time.

Scrapbook Urls

This is an incredibly long post but I have seen so many people who say they have given up on trying to assign a URL to a photo from their scrapbook ... please give this a try even if you've failed before. If you would like an e-mail of this post, please e-mail me.

A URL is an address like a post office box number where an item can be found.

By "select", I mean to move your cursor to that item and press Return.

Select Home.
Select Community,
Select Pagebuilder.
Select Scrapbook.

Select the photo to which you are interested in assigning a URL. If you don't know how to put a photo in your scrapbook, see the help page for mail.

In the lower left hand corner you will see the name of the photo. It will say something like "mailed" or "import" then DX_jpg. The X represents a number - 0 through 9.

Using a pencil, about five lines down on a blank piece of paper write down this name.

Erase the underscore "_" and replace it with a period "."

Press Back twice.
Select Create.
Select +.
Select the Grey page.
Select "Choose this to add a title....".
In the box, type PHOTOS.
Select Done.
Select Add an Item.
Select Picture.
Select Your scrapbook.
Select the same photo that you selected earlier and for which you wrote down the name.
Select Done.
Select Publish.
Select Continue.
Select Publish.

Right below "It can be found at...." there is a URL.

On your sheet of paper, about three lines above where you wrote down the name of the photo, copy down the URL that you see. Every character must be exactly correct.

Select Done.
After PHOTOS, write /scrapbookFiles/. The capital F is important.

Now put everything that you have written down together without any spaces and you have the URL of your photo. Every character MUST be exactly correct.

You can use GO TO with this URL and find the photo.

You can CCP or type this URL into the text area of an e-mail and send it to someone.

That someone can then select it and see your photo.

If you wish to otherwise process it, you now have the URL.

You have now published a one page web site.

If you wish to remove it, use the help pages.
Hope this works and helps.
E-mail always welcome. Jim in Silverdale.
