E-mail, and Search Tips
PROXY SERVER
By using WebTV, you are using a proxy server
(http://developer.webtv.net/authoring/proxy/)
A proxy server sits between you and the sites you visit. Because you use a proxy server, your email address is not given out just by looking at a site. If a site could grab your address just because you looked at it, it would show up at
http://ident.junkbusters.com/.
HOW MUCH MAIL STORAGE
It is now 4mb in the saved folder and 4mb in the inbox. The above change also means the sent and discard folders are now cleared every _4_ days instead of 7 like before. The sent and discard folders don't count towards that 4mb. That means you can save up to 500 small text only messages like you're reading right now.
This message would be between .01% and .02% in size. Size is what counts in saving messages not the number of messages. Very heavy HTML messages can take up to 2% while those pesky WebTv Plus wav attachments can take up to 70% and more in _one_ message
10 MINUTE TIMEOUT
What was that trick to keep things going after the ten minute time lapse when writing e-mail?
When you're getting close to "time out" press "goto" and type in the letter "A." You'll get a pop-up telling you it's an unknown URL, _and_ you'll get another ten minutes!
I am likely to lose what I wrote if I use Go To unless I put the email thru spelling. I suggest testing on a sample 1st. Options sometimes works
Another trick is to press home button ---- then let the homepage load----and then press back button----it should take you back to the page you were writing on---and it should be just like you left it.
I've found that when leaving a partially written email that if I "remove signature" before leaving it, it will be there when I return and select either the "write" or "reply" as I had before.
DISAPPEARING CURSOR
The minute your cursor "disappears" while typing an email, hit your "return/enter" key and you will find it on the next line. Then just hit your "back" key and it will put it where it belongs...
You can also just click on "remove signature", type the letter, then turn it back on before you send.
We've all been dealing with the disappearing cursor for months now. WebTV says they are aware of the problem and are working (?) on it. In the meantime, here is how I deal with it.
When I see the cursor has disappeared, I hit the return key about 4-5 times and then use the "up" arrow key to return the cursor to where I want it to be. This creates a space between where you are typing and the unseen next line.
Continue typing and you will not have a problem with losing the cursor while finishing that email.
Even if your unit times out, you can't see your cursor, but can continue typing and will see the letters as you type them.So you can continue your email, and then reconnect when done.
Last year someone posted that. Only problem was that you couldn't start new paragraphs. If you hit Return, you reconnect.
EMAIL TO POSTER
When you want to email the person who made a post, instead of posting to the group, use this trick. Instead of clicking on "Mail To," click on the person's email addy instead. This will guarantee that you will be emailing them instead of posting a personal reply to a newsgroup.
When responding to an email and you want to check the original before sending, just click on "Attach original message" instead of using the Back key. This has never failed me.

Using a Microphone
You can plug in a microphone to record 30-second sound clips to send on your emails. On my PM plus, the mic jack is on the back, but I don't know about the Sonys.
What you do is plug in your mic, write your email, then when you are ready to record, click over onto "recording"...you get a popup that looks a lot like a tape recorder control panel. Pretty self-explanatory. then when you are satisfied with what you have recorded, click onto "add to email" and then "send".
Microphones for Webtv Plus
There are 3 different types of Microphones:
Professional - These use a large 'XLR' balanced connector that has 3 prongs.
Computer - These require a Sound Card inside the PC's case to work.
Consumer - This is the one you want. They come with several different sizes of jacks. You need to match the size with the port on the back of your WebTV unit. Adapters are also available.
The 2001 Radio Shack catalogue has Mics ranging in price from $5 to over $100. Check out page 208.
I have a Rado Shack wireless microphone model number 32-1221B that works with WebTV. It works fine.
I use the Radio Shack 33-3025A and it works fine.
MATCHING BACKGROUND COLOR
If you're having a hard time matching the bgcolor to an image this is a real help. If you're doing framing and coloring bgrounds at Image Magick, it's great:

ACCENT ñ
I know that most of you know this, but just in case _somebody_ doesn't.....
In a edition of Webtv News, the reply to a question about placing the accent above the n .....ñ .... stated that it can only be done using html and the code &tilde.
It can be done without html by holding down the Alt key, click on the tilde key, click on the n (nothing will show at this point) release Alt key and click on n again. The ñ appears in place with the accent mark.

RECEIPT MAIL
Any of you good people know of a free mail site that offers Return Receipt? It would be nice to know that the person you sent an e-mail to, had actually received it. I know the greeting sites have that feature. Cannot understand why it not available on e-mail.

GIFT CERTIFICATES
If you're looking for those last minute Christmas gifts here's a thought:
http://www.webcertificate.com
offers online gift certificates. They can be spent online by the recipient at any site that accepts Mastercard®
I have both sent and received webcertificates, and have had no problems with them! An added bonus ... ya don't have to leave Webbie to go Christmas shopping! ;~) Roy
SPELLCHECK ADD WORD
You can type a misspelled word in the text area of your e-mail Write page and click on Spelling to bring up the spelling choices and the word list link on the side bar.
Then click on word list which brings up the Add word choice. Add the word you want and success!! there it is.
(Without a misspelled word in e-mail, Spelling just brings a pop-up saying there are no misspelled words.)
SLOW TYPING
Have you ever had an animation in your signature that made typing extremely slow? Each time the animation moved, it would cause a hesitation.
Just discovered that if you press your return key so that the animation is below the typing screen, it doesn't affect your typing. You don't even have to return it to it's place and the end of the text. When sent and received, it's where it's supposed to be. Maybe you all know this already (or haven't had the problem), but thought I'd share it with you.
OCTET STREAM ATTACHMENT
After clicking on the attachment at yahoo and getting the pop up I pressed goto and show last. I cut and paste that url and went to this site:
http://wheel.compose.cs.cmu.edu:8001/cgi-bin/browse/objweb
I entered the url and converted it into text. I was able to see the url that was for the octet stream attachment and then view it. Now I don't know much about these attachments or what is behind them, but this worked for me. Dazzlelee (Lee) sent me this site and I wanted to share it with everyone. Thanks, Lee
Melissa
