Web Page Tips

PAGE TIP

If the public box is _un-clicked_ (making it unavailable to the public) then your other users are all still able to access your page! That's handy to know, saved favs on a page can be viewed by other users! Saves alot of work. Without going public.

Choosing to _not_ "include in public list" will keep your Page "private."

I'd like to clarify just a wee bit here. Most of you know the "trick" to finding other people's pages. (In your "Go To" box, type "community.webtv.net/username/. That will only "bring up" a list of publicly listed pages.
However, it is _possible_, and let me stress that word (possible), for someone to "guess" at the name of a page and be able to view it. It's not really a hack, since it doesn't involve codes, as such, but an "innovative" user just might be able to guess at your page name after only several tries.

Just something to keep in mind, so you don't get a false sense of security.
(Thanks, Tex)

PAGE SOURCES

For me I find Tripod and Geocities to be easier to work with. WebTv = 3MB of usable space for Web Page. That isn't much at all. Both my sites are somewhere between 4.5 and 5 MB total at this time. So even if I started a pagebuilder site _before_ the other 2 I'd have to dump it anyway for lack of usable workspace.

Geocities = 11MB of space.
Tripod = 50MB of space. (I think) It's more than 11 at any rate. Started my Tripod page on 3/20/98 and my Geocities site on 12/15/98. Both at least a year before the pagebuilder was even available.

I have 3 separate accounts at Tripod.
They offer 50 MB for free and they are WebTV friendly. When they upgraded about a year ago, they kept the special "WebTV Area/Housekeeper" (File Manager). You can use all the same 'facilities' as a computer user, but via these special pages. I find it very easy to use. My website (under construction) currently has about 60 pages averaging 50 KB each, plus my Gifs, Mids, Wavs, etc. all add up to 5 MB. I still have to add the tools, tutorials and other 'goodies' (doing this currently), and I figure I will still only have used 15 to 20 MB.

Try it: http://www.tripod.com/

For Transloading, I use

http://www.transloader.com/

Handles file sizes up to 1.4 Gigabytes (enormous) is very WebTV friendly (built by a WebTVer); and _extremely_ fast (average transfer 2 seconds).

For multiple files try this new site, posted recently in here. I've yet to check everything, but he has a "FTP Directory Mover" (7th link down) to move entire directories in one shot. Also, (8th link) "Multiple File Transloader" for up to 15 files at once.

http://onnet-z.com/transload/multi/index.cgi

Just realised, I posted the url to one of his (Onnet-z) transloaders. This is the index page:

http://onnet-z.com/my_index.htm

On the other hand, the Zone is a master of customer service, uptime, community spirit, and member-only tools:

http://www.Wtv-Zone.com

They allow linking.

As far as comparing "pay" sites, I think the Zone is superior to Domania.

As far as free sites that allow linking, here's one: http://www.WebProvider.com

I have recently come across

http;//www.50megs.com.

I was able to move my entire GeoCities site with the click of one button.

I haven't had it long enough to say if I like it or not; but the transfer of files was fast and easy.

ADVANCED EDITOR

Do you know how to do "advanced editor' in PB? You over ride the built in editor, Check it out here, "using adv. ed. in PB"

PAGEBUILDER VOLUME

I know we have approx. 3 mb space for our pagebuilder albums. Is this 3 mb. per user, or total for the LBB? I know it might sound dumb, but I am not sure exactly what 3 mb is????

It is 3MB _per user_ (6 users=18MB).
Webpage data (anything you put in; even a few letters) is calculated in 'Bytes'.

Thus, 1000 Bytes = 1KB (KiloBytes).

Therefore, 1000 KB = 1MB (MegaBytes).

So, 3MB is equal to 3,000,000 Bytes or 3,000 KB. As an example, your post would be (approx.) 2 to 3 KB.

Also, bear in mind that your Scrapbook is part of the 3MB! To check how much space you have available in PB or Scrapbook, go to your 'Index' and click on a document (if you have anything saved), then 'Cleanup' to get the percentage of space used. If you have items in your Scrapbook, it will usually tell you what %age is taken up by that. It is the _combined_ %age which gives you the total of your 3 MB used.

BLACK BOXES

A few months ago I read a post that said the black boxes are on a page because a gif is shown more than once on a page. Since I was having that problem with a page that I had made, I made identical gifs -- with different URLs. And the black boxes disappeared! Since then, every time I see a Black box on a page, I look around, and sure enough -- there are 2 or more identical gifs on the page. It's still a Webtv glitch though.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

For something different, try using the color filter tool to view various webtv pages in various colors:

http://webwizardsways.com/tools/colors/colorFilter.html

wtv-tricks:/home
wtv-tricks:/mail
wtv-tricks:/messenger-onoff

The majority of WebTv pages (the internal ones) are indeed 'hidden'. They can be accessed by typing (for example):

wtv-tricks:/mail instead of http:// URL.

Many webtvers use these 'tricks' on their websites to offer you the option to go to your mailbox, favs, etc. instead of pressing the buttons on your kb (not much difference, but a nice option).

The 'Status Board' is different, however, in that it resides on a website....WebTV's website, which like any other, is accessible to anyone.

PICTURES TO SCRAPBOOK

To add a PP or any picture to your scrapbook: Put this on an F-Key.

http://community-2.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/scrapbookupload/

Click on the picture you want then click on your F-Key. The Url will be there. Add .jpg to it that is (dot jpg), and send it to your scrapbook.
