Jimbo is looking for inexpensive HP cartridges. Jim, please try this link to Toner Ltd. I have been getting my cartridges for my 670C from them for quite some time.

Send them a couple of empties and they send you a refurbished black (29A) for $16.95 and the color (49A) for $18.95.

I have found their service to be totally satisfactory. The site tells you everything you need to know including their definition of "refurbish".

RESETTING YOUR PRINTER

Un-plug the webtv from the electrical outlet,

Disconnect the printer from your webtv,

Plug the webtv back into the outlet,

Turn on the webtv and connect.

Your webtv will think it has no printer attached.

Now turn it off and un-plug it again,

Re-connect the printer to your webtv,

Plug the webtv back into the outlet,

Turn on the webtv again with the printer connected to the webtv.

Your webtv will know it has a printer attached.

Now press the print button.

What the above does is cause the webtv to find the proper printer driver for your unit.

You should be able to printer as normal.

I hope this helps you and anyone else who might have this problem.

SURGE PROTECTORS

My tv, vcr and LBB are all plugged into a surge protector. My printer and scanner are not.

This is the reply I received from Canon on 1/18/00 when I inquired about connecting my printer to a surge protector.

A surge protector is fine, but do not power the surge suppressor off.

Be certain the printer in not being powered off with a master power switch or a surge suppressor.

The printer is designed to stay connected to the AC power at all times.

This allows the printer to enter a power down mode when not in use.

When the printer is not allowed to enter the designed power down mode, this allows the ink to be exposed to air and evaporate.

I have complied with their advice and have never had a problem with my printer.

When there have been power black outs, I always run a few things through my printer as soon as power is restored to activate its system.

Although my information was gleaned from Canon, I believe it applies to all ink jet printers...

Unless otherwise stated in their instruction manuals.
~Nutmeg~

Note:

Actually, not all inkjet printers are the same.
It is fine, for example, to power down the Lexmark Z12 with a master switch.

Whenever the printer is not printing, the cartridge/print head moves to the right and sits in a special sealing rest to prevent drying out. Cutting power at that point will leave it there.

When powering up, the head moves back and forth and back to its resting spot within a few seconds, waiting for some command.

If the lid is opened, it moves to the middle of the open area for easy changing but as soon as the lid is lowered, it returns to its rest.

Its power brick gets pretty warm so it's best to power down when not in use.

Have you tried the "Last Rites for Dead Printers," as recommended by WebTV?

1. Shut off both WebTV and printer; unplug both from the wall

2. Disconnect the printer cable from the back of the WebTV only

3. Plug both back in and power up, log in

4. Press Cmd-p to bring up the Print popup; click on Print

5. Reconnect the printer cable to the back of the WebTV

According to WebTV, this "resets" the printer identification function. It has helped others in the past... hope it helps you. Saverio

IMPORTANT for people having Cannon BJC 2000 printing problems
.
This post will be long but worth the reading if you want to fix your printer so it'll print again. -- First this is what Webtv 800# New Mexico office [supervisor no less] told me yesterday --- then I'll tell you what to do [very simple]. I did it and so far have printed out 4 different pages with no problem.
But credit must be given for solving the problem to a real nice guy from the Northeast USA who took the time to email me and let me know what he did to fix the same problem. [I feel it's only proper not to give his name or email out]--Everybody -- On Your Knees To Him--LOL!! First here is what Webtv told me--after will follow what to do. He has a plus and I have a new classic unit, so it works for both.
--------------------------------------
Here's what Webtv told me---
Talked to supervisor from 1-800-469-3288 Web TV Customer Service [New Mexico] She told me "Cannon is trying to pass the buck" that "their driver is messed up" and to call Cannon and tell them you want something done about the defective driver.
I told her -- you mean all the people that are having the same problem as I am with my printer [Cannon BJC 2000] ALL THESE PEOPLE ALL OF A SUDDEN HAVE DEFECTIVE DRIVERS? -- She said apparently yes. Then I said I had mine since Dec.1999 and never a problem till yesterday and everyone else that's had theirs with no problem all of a sudden all these drivers are defective and she said yes.
Then she said she was going to tell me one more time and then she was ending the call --- to call Cannon and tell them I have a defective driver or I can wait for a tech. to get in touch with me in 7 to 10 days --because of the change over from Webtv to MSN that's how long it'll take for someone to get back to me because they are behind. [What a bunch of you know what]
------------------------------------

Now for the fix-- but PLEASE NOTE!--I suggest you do this just 1 time. If it doesn't work there might be something else wrong with yours and you could damage your unit if you keep putting the same thing over and over in it.

1.--Turn your unit off.

2.--Hit option key 3 times then put in             31820 and make sure the lights flash on your unit.

3.--Unplug your unit from outlet first.

4.--Unplug printer from outlet and unplug printer cable from printer -- you don't have to unplug printer cable from unit.

5.--Wait 10 to 15 minutes -- then plug unit in first.

6.-- Plug printer cable into printer and printer plug in outlet.

7.--Turn unit on and go through the               moved steps, etc.--you should here           your printer setting itself --wait for it to       finish then go for it and try to print             something.

It should work and remember to let the printer finish resetting after each printing.
