Some truths and myths about the SS427

These are some of the things I have learned about these cars since purchasing mine. A SS427 does not have to have super sport equipment. Z-03 is the code for SS and Z-24 is the code for SS427. A SS427 should have Z-24 and may have Z-03 which would get you bucket seats, consol and guages. I have seen several cars with bench seat and column shift. The front fender bezels do not have to say SS427 to be correct. The early production cars, non SS included, Used a foil decal in the bezel rather than a cast in displacement as the later cars had. I'm not sure on the exact date of change, but the most common answer I get is feb. 68. So if you have a 427 car built after feb and you think the badges are incorrect, don't worry about it. Just because most of the literature from GM does not include the 425 HP engine in the Impala doesn't mean it wasn't available. There are several 425HP cars out there. Some things to look for when verifying a SS427; for starters, the hood is exclusive to the SS427 along with the simulated fender gilles. There should be a dash emblem with the 427 logo along with grille and trunk lid badges. Look at the fenders to see if the holes for the gilles have been drilled or stamped. If the holes have a rough edge on the back side from a drill bit, chaces are the fender is not original SS427. These cars also had a SS427 steering wheel emblem. I have had some well knowing Impala guys tell me not all cars had this so I can't say for sure. The 385 HP cars should have 2 lines from the gas tank, one supply line and the other a return line. Automatic cars should have the code CB on the trans. The bushing on the rear locating bar on 427 cars is larger than a standard Impala. These cars should have the F-40 suspension package which includes a 15/16 front sway bar vs. a 7/8 on standard suspension. The tach, if so equiped, should have a 5500 RPM redline vs. a 5000 on the standard tach. To the best of my knowlege the only way to verify 100% what you have is the build sheet or original window sticker.
