(1) Eighth Century: "Deutsch" (German) was first used.

(2) Some tribes that formed the German race before 1,000 A.D.: Franks, Bavarians, Saxons, Swabians.

(3) In 1681 land was made available in Pennsylvania by William Penn: two English pounds for 100 acres.

(4) 1683: Germantown, Pennsylvania was founded by thirteen families.

(5) Reasons for coming to the United States: crop failure, excessive taxation, harsh winters, military conscription, religious persecution, wars, etc.

(6) Philadelphia was the "promised land" for Germans, as there was religious toleration, affordable land, and established German settlements.

(7) 1727 to 1775: about 70,000 Germans emigrated to Pennsylvania.

(8) German church records date back to 1600, give or take a few years.

(9) Germany is the second largest country in Europe (Russia is first.), with a population numbering approximately eighty-one million.
