Miss Vickie says "_________" |

She is totally deaf; consequently, she doesn't "say" very much either (since we had her spayed). Until then, since she couldn't hear herself yowl, she was UNBELIEVABLY LOUD!! We knew she was deaf when we first took her to the veterinarian. We told him she couldn't hear anyone coming up behind her. So he dropped a metal pan on the floor to see if she'd flinch ( she didn't). He charged us $5.00 for a "pan-drop test". We haven't been back to him. We adopted Miss Vickie in 1997. She was wandering loose, pregnant, and, as I said, deaf. The poor thing would not have been able to survive outside very long. Unfortunately, or fortunately, her kittens did not live. She still "looks" for them occasionally, in the closet where they were stillborn. It's so sad. |

Another stray we adopted, in 1999, although I'd been "sneaking" her food for a year before that. It got to the point where she'd recognize my 1990 white Mitsubishi Mirage when it pulled into the parking lot. She'd jump on the hood when it stopped, then climb to the driver's-side mirror, and in the window. As a small kitten, she injured one of her hips, or a back leg, somehow. That's how she got her name. Her favorite toy is a grey mouse, kind of like this one: |

Hers doesn't move by itself, but it gets around. I find it sometimes on the bed (it's a "present"), and sometimes in her water dish. I don't know why some cats put things in their water dishes, but they do . . .could they have an urge to "wash" their food, like raccoons? Omar was old, to begin with. He was getting skinny and frail. Then he jumped down from too high a place, and broke one of his back legs. I just couldn't see putting him through a long, painful "recovery", especially since he would never recover completely, only to have him die anyway in a few more months. The vet gave him a shot, and he went to sleep one more time. That's all he knew, at least. He didn't know he would never wake up again; I'm not even sure animals KNOW they will wake up when they go to sleep. Omar, my precious, good night. |

UPDATE!!! Since this page was first published in 2000, we have taken in two more strays: Boo-Boo Kitty, a small mostly black-with- white-features female; and, most recently, a male kitten who resembles Omar very closely. I'm calling him Edgar "Mice" Burrows. I do wish people around here would learn to keep their cats INSIDE and get them NEUTERED. At the very least, they could stop giving them our address! Cats purr at the same rate as an idling deisel engine -- 26 cycles per second. However, they get much fewer miles per gallon! |
