WHY ISN'T MY PRINTER WORKING?
http://askwebtv.webtv.net/HelpCenter/equipment/printing/working.html?

Re-setting the driver *may* fix it too:

To reset the way that MSN TV sees your printer:
1. Power off your receiver
2. Hit the "Option" button several times on your keyboard
3. Enter the numbers, 31820
4. The lights on your receiver will flash: red-yellow-green if entered correctly.
5. Power on your receiver

A few comments about printers and associated troubles:

*Most* printing problems are INK related, that could be caused directly or indirectly to poor maintainence:

- Old, UN-used ink that has dried up and plugged nozzles and/or heads. Ink can not be saved, it has to be used, regularly, like once a week. NOT using your printer is false economy.

- Burned out print heads, which contain a 'heating resistor' that sprays the ink, forming the text or image on a page.

- Ink is even a 'cooling agent', protecting the print head, allowing the printer to continue working with barely enough ink will damage the print head.

- A printer that has the print head built into the ink cart is replaced when replacing that ink cart, usually ending printing problems.

- *Just* cleaning a seperate print head, will not necesarily "re-new" that print head if it is damaged. Cleaning will only help remove dried up ink clogs.

- Replacing an old ink cart with a "new" ink cart will sometimes still result ink printing problems.
Just because it is new, does NOT mean that it is FRESH ink. You could have a brand new OEM ink cart, un-opened, 10 years old and it most likely will not be any good. There is a shelf life, usually about 1 year, sometimes on the package.

- Older, unopened ink carts will usually be more usable than color ink carts.

- Refilling ink carts can be a thrifty way to extend the life of an ink cart, maybe 6-8 times before a new ink cart will be needed. It can also be too time consuming and/or messy, not to be bothered with.

- Pop-up on-screen messages often provide a false notice, meaning that if it says:
"Paper Jam", it's possible to instead mean: "Ink Failure" (as in no ink, low ink, dried up ink).

- That same model of printer used on WebTV will offer many more choices when used on a computer, such as: low ink warning, which pages to print, how many copies, etc.

- Paper feed problems can be caused by using: too much paper, un-fanned paper, the wrong paper, but usually the rollers simply need cleaning.

- And of course the very obvious:
Loose or poor connections. So often the movement of equipment for cleaning purposes causes those loose connections. And pets love to chew on those cables which contain several smaller wires causing failure.
