Charity scams are especially effective with the state of the economy right now. Most of us are naturally generous and want to help during the hard times. Have serenity for horses.
Especially if it involves a horse rescue. Beware of FRAUD

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There are Local rescues that have done some very dishonst things. Very deceptive.
A true CON-Artist.
Thoroughly check out Rescues in Warren County Springboro, Ohio BEFORE getting involved.

SERENITY HORSE RESCUE

There has been a lot of activity on the internet concerning this rescue lately, Some people said they did a background check and found a lot, I didn't beleive it all.
So I went to search to see what I could really find.

THANK YOU to those who got things going on the internet.
I found out a lot more than you posted.

Well I did find a lot of truth.
Founder/President (Shula Woodworth DOB 10/9/67) of Serenity Horse Rescue has a history. When you do a background check, you'd be surprised what you'll find.
All public records and eye witnesses

These witnesses are not people who have a grudge against this rescue, But are people who have been donors, volunteers, people who have boarded with them and people who went to visit facility etc

If they OWE you money, they can be reached at:
(last known address)
330 East St.
Springboro, OH 45066

(previous address (foreclosure 2008):
1189 Riley Wills Rd., Lebanon, OH 45036

Last Stable located at:
5224 Dearth Rd.
Springboro, OH 45066
Was renting barn from John Wainscott Quarter Horses.

WELL ------ moved once again

Here is a list of just some of the things that showed up on my searches.
It Is ALL "Public Record"

She CANNOT honestly deny these things...
But she is trying to deny them.

If it wasn't the TRUTH and on public records
It would not be posted here

This is NOT defamation since . . . .
By them being a non-profit and using public funds, grants, YOUR money.
Everyone has the right to know who she really is.

Just a few of the things that were found are:

*** Warrent for her arrest - Been in Jail, Fall 2008 Warren County
Paid a large fine/court costs
We can guess where that money came from -She did not have employment.
How about rescue funds?
Your Generous Donations at work :)

*** Criminal charges in Butler County - was ordered by court, not permitted in any Meijers stores
AND Jail time and psychiatrist's report
Oh my, what did she do Psychiatric orderd by court
Will have the answers listed SOON!

AND more fines/court cost paid
Where did the money come from?
Your Generous Donations at work?

*** Alcoholic - YES, confirmed alcoholic

*** Listed on "Crime Stoppers" and ordered by court to reimburse their listing fee

*** Had horses removed from her by the Warren County Sheriffs, that she was keeping while a cruelty case was pending (Franklin-Trenton horses case).
I guess, She did as good job as the owner.
The Sheriffs removed the horses from SerenityHorseRescue's care when they heard/seen how SHR was taking or not taking care of them.

*** She took a ladies horses (that she was suppose to be temporarily boarding for owner while owner was findng new residence) Shula moved them to a differant location and did not tell the owner.Would not return the horses to the owner nor would tell where she moved the horses to.. she tried selling them on internet. They were listed on dreamhorse.com and other horse classifieds by Serenity Horse Rescue.
The Sheriffs made her return these horses to their owner. Shula had no legal rights to these horses.

*** Ohio Attorney Generals office investigation

*** Rescued a couple horses (which was in the media _"Caesar" and "Harmony"), the people at the racetrack was graciously enough to let her keep them there temporarily if she would furnish their grain--hay, shavings.
BUT , she never came to take care of them, never brought them any grain--hay or shaving etc.
Basically abandoned them onto the nice people of the track to tack care of, but she took all the good media coverage of the horses and accepted donations for them. Where was those donations used???
This went on ....
Until the fairboard had to force her to come remove them, which was an ongoing battle. she would ignore them and their phone calls. The racetrack people would call her about bring food etc and she would tell them she will be there, but never show up, they got tired of forking her bills.
She was then asked to remove them, she would not respond. One of the people adopted Caesar and asked her to come get Harmony. She would not show up with food or to remove her. Finally they threatened her with the sheriffs. She then removed the horse. She appears to be a USER.

*** Moves her rescue around place-to-place and leaves debts unpaid. AGAIN a "USER". Been kicked out of many locations for what she does (or doesn't do)!
I do not think this is very honest.
Do You Feel Comfortable Putting Your Money In Her Hands?

Every place they have been, she has left in turmoil

Many un-paid bills
Vets?
Farriers?
Utilities?
Rent?
Feed/Hay bills?
The list could go on and on.

So Many Poeople have tried to help Serenity out, but Serenity takes advantage of their generosity. Then it ends badly when people see things, that should not be USER

This has happened every place they have been!

The past several years no real employment.
Husband been in and ot of mental hospital.
Home loan and internet services, cable TV, cell phone, gas money (on the road all the time), new things being purchased etc.

We Ask....
Hmmm ... where did the money come from to pay for all these things and more.

See donations come in, but rescue seems not to have money to pay for horse feed, etc.
Where did it go???

Mystery question!

Again.... Do you feel comfortable giving them your hard earned money?
I and others sure don't . . .
When there are OTHER Honest Rescues needing help.
The dishonest ones gives the Good Ones a bad name.

*****
Been witnessed to using false receipts to account for rescue money missing from account.

Been witnessed to a lady donating lots & lots (and I mean LOTS) of horse tack (including saddles, bridles, blankets) to the rescue. On the terms that the rescue was not to sell any of it. It was only to be used within the rescue and given to people who adopts.
Well, the Founder-President actually was selling it for cash. Sold a lot of it at a local tack sale. Pocket the cash.

*****

Knows how to work the system
Honest or Dishonest?

*****
Reports grain was bad to get grain replaced.
But. . . do not return the bad grain, say it was thrown away.
But actually was Not bad and was fed.
Gee, get twice the grain for the price of one.
Working the system dishonestly

*****
Have several witnesses hearing them say
"Well if we keep the horses looking skinny, people will feel sorry for them and donate money to us".
We feel this is horrible!
The horses suffer for their personal gain.
*****
Also seen found on the internet .....

Life In England not so good
Alcohol? Drugs? Prostitution?

Checking these out too!

You have a right to know about the people you donate to
They are using your money, grant money etc.
You have a right to know what is Public Record

Be sure to get full background history of those you donate to.
Otherwise where does your money really go?
KNOW Who You Are Dealing With!

There are some truey honest rescues out there that really need your donations for their rescue.
DONATE TO THEM -- Not The Dishonest Ones

There are many GOOD-HONEST rescues out there to donate your money and time to, Than to give to people with a bad past criminal record.
Accepting donations is no place for someone with that kind of history.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So it is VERY IMPORTANT that you do your research before donating anything to an organization or rescue. - Especially CASH

Even if they are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. That DOES NOT protect you.
They may seem honest, but that is how they work.
They know how-to work the system. Using fake receipts etc.
Everyone (volunteers, board members etc) in their group may not know what has or is happening. But as they do find out, they leave the group. So there are legite referances out here that can tell first hand past history of Founders/Owners of the rescue, WITH proof.

There are Rescues out there that only put up a front. Yes, they may have rescue horses and volunteers, but are the horses getting the proper care? Food- Vet Service -Farrier Service Etc?? From the time they arrived into the rescue.

Many horses have come into rescue in good weight, but LOOSE weight after being in the rescue.
The horses in the rescue that look in good condition ususally came to them in good condition.

People within the rescue try to keep the GOOD horses for themselves, but keep these horses listed in the rescue so they can use rescue funds to support them.
But will not let them be adopted. Hmmm

• How many horses have they taken in? Are they Owner Releases, purchased at auctions, placed by the county or law officials, etc? Is there paperwork on each animal

• How many horses do they currently have?

• How many horses have they actually adopted out? Must be abe to show adoption contracts Have they been willing to adopt them out or just hold onto them to try to get Cash Donations from pitty.

• Can they show proof and referances? Not just present people.

• Do they have adoptable useable horses in the rescue that they are not willing to adopt out? Why? Isn't that what a rescue is all about ... rescueing and finding new homes

• Does ALL of the donated money go towards the CARE of the horses? Feed, vet & farrier only? How much money gets pocketed? The unclaimed cash donations or money made from selling items that was donated for the rescues use, but sold instead for "in pocket" cash.

When you check deep, it is Not always what it appears to be. Not ran the way it appears to be! Money is NOT used the way appears to be! Animals do not get the care a rescue is suppose to give! AGAIN Check PAST History. From Day One.

PAST Reputation Says A Lot - Means A Lot Once a Thief Always a Thief
Once a Con-Artist Always a Con-Artist

They can have a lot of publicity and still not be on the up & up. Newspapers & etc don't do the background check before publishing articles. So .. Just because there may be artricles published DOES NOT mean they are legite and doing the right things.
BEWARE of FRAUD - Money used for personal purposes.

So they say they are a not-for profit organization. This is NOT the same as a registered non-profit. Having a tax exempt number does not always mean they are non-profit. Anyone can get a tax exempt number!
This does not mean they're totally legit on the way they run the rescue or how they use the donations they receive.

And beware, just because a rescue has their 501(c)3 status, still does not mean they are truely running legal. CHECK OUT PAST HISTORY!
Anyone can put together false paperwork and false files to get their 501(c)3.

Please thoroughly check all rescues out before Donating, Volunteering, Adopting or Giving them your horse.

Here are the major things that you need to do to protect yourself, your money or your animal against fraud.

  • Don't GIVE without gathering details about the organization or rescue, the nature of it's program and it's use of funds.
  • Visit the facility many times without appointment to see what really goes on. If they have nothing to hide, no problem
  • Ask to see records. Ask for written material.
  • Don't feel bad about asking hard questions, and don't feel pressured into donating.
  • Don't be hasty about donating just because the rescue makes you feel sorry for the animals. That's a Scam Tactic

Verify the organization or rescues tax exempt status. They need to be registered with the IRS and be current on required paperwork with the IRS.

  • Have they filed Form 990, which MUST be filed each year in operation. Check ALL years. If cannot supply -walk away
  • Organizations and rescues are required to provide copies to anyone who request it.
  • ... Important
  • Ask if they are accredited by the Better Business Bureau. If no, then ask why?
  • Call the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints filed against the organization or rescue.
  • ... Important
  • Call the Ohio Attorney Generals Office
  • ... Important
  • Is this organization or rescue really a non-profit 501c3 or just pending status.
  • There is a differance!
  • ... Important
  • Call the local Law - Sheriffs Office - Ask questions
  • Talk to other rescues - Reputaion means a lot. A legitable rescue will referr people to other legitable rescues.
  • Even If They Are a 501(c)3 non-profit --- They still can be dishonest and Scamming people. Don't let the 501(c)3 title fool you.

Know Who They Really Are - Who's Getting Your Money or Animal

This goes without saying, but you'd be surprised how they skirt that issue.

If they can't or won't provide you with the things requested. BEWARE!
Ask for copies for each and every year the organization or rescue has been in operation.
From Day One

You have the right to information about the organization or rescue and how it is ran, where funds are used, information about the animals, etc.

DON'T BE ASHAMED ABOUT BEING SUSPICIOUS

People love to use animals to work on our hearts.
And we fall for it!
Don't Let Them Scam You

If the Rescue refuses to give you EVERYHING you ask for or if they give you excuses or promises & delays
BEWARE!!!! and Walk Away

There are a lot of honest legitemate rescues out there that could use your donations.

Do Background Check on the people running the Rescue We have already done that on some people. We can provide copies,if you like.
Do they have a criminal record of any kind?
Have they ever spent time in jail?
Any Drug or Alcohol problems?

The Bad rescues are giving the Legitimate ones a bad name.

Okay, now you say you're confused and ask if we are for or against a certain named rescue
Well . . . If you have doubt and must ask,
Well . . . You just answered your question.

  • Ask to see the record books and receipts - L@@K carefully at them. Compare them. Do they balance out? Don't accept photo copies of receipts -- Was it paid by cash, check, credit card, was it the rescue's account?? If not, then it is someone elses receipt
  • Ask for referances - past and present • Volunteers, Vets, Farriers, Places they do business with.
  • Do your footwork - Call ALL local vets, farriers, feed stores etc.
  • Have they been at one location or many? If many, why? Check them all out!
  • Check out past locations - Hear what they have to say about the organization or rescue.
  • Ask for blank copies of all their contracts for accepting animals and adoption, volunteers etc.
  • Do they have board members and experiencd staff taking care of the animals?
  • Ask for names and contact info - Talk to them
  • Do they have proper insurance? Not just property owner liability insurance?
  • Ask about the training procedures for volunteers- ages etc.
  • Do they use the animals to make money? Could be unethical & illegal to do so.
  • Do they operate a business from their location? Could be illegal to do so.
  • There should be two seperate record keeping for rescue and business money making
  • Ask for past and present board memebers name & contact info for all years of operation.
  • Ask for past and present volunteers - not confidentual
  • If can not or will not provide - Walk Away
  • .
  • Making false copies of receipts is easy - Some do it to make it look like they are legit.
  • .
  • Making excuses why there is negative responses from businesses and referances, tells you who is right.
  • Their excuse is everyone is lying. ___ Everyone from the PAST can't be lying! Come on now.
  • Do a Background Check on them. We did! Do you want a copy?

There Are Some Real Con Artists Out There - Don't Be Scammed

If you are planning to donate your animal to a rescue.

Can the rescue afford to take proper care (feed, vets, farrier etc) if they don't get donations. They SHOULD be able to.
They should only accept the number they can afford to take proper care of!

Does the rescue do adequate fundraisers to support their animals or do they rely ONLY on the generosity of others knd heart of donations?
They should put effort into it - NOT all feebies.

A Good Rescue should have the means to take care of the animals they accept with only limited donations.

Does the Officers, Director, Owners etc have employment elsewhere to support their family or do they rely on funds from the organization or rescue to support them?

Carefully check out the PAST history of the Founder, Officers and Directors. Those who are taking your money or daonations. Any past crimes? Ect?

• Are there any rescue funds being paid to any officer, director, volunteer etc?
• Does ALL the funds go towards the direct care of the horses - feed, vet , farrier?
• Does any of your donated money go to pay rent, utility bills etc? Why?

• Are ALL the animals actually being placed up for adoption? If not, WHY?

• Are the animals being sold for profit?

• Are the animals being used for personal use or gain?

• Are there personally owned animals benifiting from rescue funds?

• Are the animals getting vet & etc attention upon arrival to the rescue?

• Do the animals have clean proper housing away from the cold, wet, wind, etc?

* How many horses have died whie in the care ofthe rescue? Why? See Vet paperwork

Adopting or Donating your animal

• Never sign a contract where you must pay them any monies for any reason.

• Ask for a blank contract to take home before any decisions are made.
Always have an attorney or experience person read the contract with you before signing.

Here Are Some Useful Website Links

Do Not Donate On-Line - Always give donations in person with proper receipt
NEVER give cash!

Make sure they are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization/rescue with good background history. Just having a 501(c)3 status does not mean they are truely running legal and using the funds correctly. That is why they call this kind of group Con - Scam Artist. They know how to scam their donors and their volunteers, etc. True Con artist can pull the wool over anyones eyes. That why you should fully check them out.

Always use a check and donate in person, and ONLY after visiting and thoroughly researching the organization or rescue.

ALWAYS ask for and get a signed receipt, even if you are donating a product (in-kind goods).

When donating products (in-kind goods), NEVER give the organization or rescue your receipt of purchase. They can use it in a fraudulent way!

Please Contact Us if you know of a Rescue doing anything fishy or illegal. We can have them reported and checked out.
