Educational, informational, and leadership tools throughout the Pacific Northwest USA, and Canada... Also with prior community involvement in these areas for over 30 years.
Ben and Sue Charles, owners and operators of Native Media, are dedicated to working for better informed, healthier communities.
"Northwest Native Culture" is the title of the highly rated, and much awarded television series which Ben and Sue produced for several years, starting in 1992. It has aired both locally, and on other cable channels around the country. Copies of the programming have gone to the far reaches of the earth, with responses still coming in from Japan, Germany and other regions.
Copies of the programs are in continual use in class rooms of schools and universities for History of the Northwest and Native American Studies curriculum.
The Northwest Native Culture programs featured a variety of subjects including: Traditional Storytelling, Native Art and Artists, Preserving Traditional Languages and Cultural in the "modern" world, Tribal Communities and their Youth Services and Educational Programs, Tribal Economic Developmet, Hearing from the Tribal Elders, Tribal Health Care programs, Regional and National Basketweaves Conferences, Land Rights and Treaty Rights issues, Tribal Fishing and Natural Resources and Conservation, and of course the news coverage of Tribal Communitiy gatherings and events and the Intra-Tribal Annual events such as the Paddle Journeys and the "Five Tribes Bike Tours", and much more.
Although they have won many awards for their television, documentary, and video production works, for Charles family, media, and information sharing takes it's shape in other ways than direct involvement in television and video production.
For example: Ben and Sue are often called upon as consultants by State Agencies, corporations, school curriculum development planners, health-care organizations, main-stream media producers, and more. They serve as liaisons for the Tribes with State Agencies, education departments, mainstream media producers, the military, and other entities.
They are also called upon as Presenters of the Cultural for schools and colleges, in conferences, seminars and workshops, at military instellations and for private sector corporate gatherings, meetings, and trainings.
During happenings such as: the Five Tribes Bike Tour, the annual Tribal Journeys Canoe Paddle events, Pow Wows and Potlatces, the Charles' will typically pack up their family and camera gear and take to the road (or water) and follow the event, even if it takes days or weeks. Sometimes in involves months - such as the Paddle to Bella Bella Canoe Journey in 1993 when they were traveling with the event and documenting everything for two months. Most times it involves from a few days to a few weeks.
So, flexibility is a large part of what the Charles family "does best".

Native Media, located in Western Washington State, USA, offers a variety of media production services, consultation, training, and leadership opportunities. Their work often takes them throughout the West Coast regions of the U.S. and Canada. And have been known to answer the call to other areas as well.
Sue is sometimes called to travel in other locations: to produce, direct, or serve as consultant on projects of various types. But she prefers to keep the family unit intact, and most typically will accept work only if it will allow this.
"We are a package deal" Sue often states, when asked to work someplace where it is not accessable for her daughter's wheelchair. She usually opts-out of these situation, and it is the rare occassion when she accepts work away from her family.
That fact doesn't seem to slow them down much, since clearly Sue and Ben are constantly busy juggling several media contracts, consultant work, Ben's "day job", and their family responsibilities all at once.
And yes, in most cases, they are indeed a "package deal".
