NFD HISTORY - AUGUST 9
1886 - A two-alarm fire killed 60 horses and destroyed the Newark & Irvington Horse Car Stables at Springfield Avenue and South 10th Street. Also damaged in the blaze were three frame dwellings.
1923 - At 02:24 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a building on Providence Street near Market Street
1931 - At 13:54 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a factory on South Street near Pacific Street
1950 - As Captain Frank J. Welch, of Engine 8, climbed down from the cab in answer to an alarm, he fell to the street unconscious - dead of a heart attack.
1956 - A 500-GPM, 275-gallon TASC/International hose wagon was assigned to Wagon 1.
NFD HISTORY - AUGUST 10
1936 - A white, 100-gallon American LaFrance hose wagon was assigned to Wagon 1, costing $5,522.
1972 - At 14:00 hours, a spectacular three-alarm fire destroyed a tire warehouse at W. Runyon Street and Badger Avenue.
1987 - At 09:48 hours, a two-alarm fire claimed one life and heavily damaged two dwellings on South 7th Street near 12th Avenue.

1980 - At 15:51 hours, a three-alarm fire destroyed three, three-story frame tenements on South 19th Street near 12th Avenue.
1988 - At 23:41 hours, a person was killed in a two-alarm fire that damaged a frame tenement on West Market Street near Bergen Street.

AUGUST 24
1929 - While operating at a fire on Charlton Street, a member of Engine 10 was seriously injured when a falling beam struck him. He died two days later as a result of his injuries.
1940 - At 21:17 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a building on Clinton Avenue near Belmont Avenue (now Turner Boulevard). (Box 4145)
1971 - At 02:47 hours, a spectacular four-alarm fire destroyed 11 frame tenements on Littleton and Fairmount Avenues near 16th Avenue. (Box 4316 - Tour 1)

1948 - At 20:42 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a factory on Lister Avenue near Catherine Street (Box 5149)
1971 - At 03:51 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged three frame tenements on W. Runyon Street near Osborne Terrace (Box 4341 - Tour 2)

1916 - At 11:14 hours, Newark's Bravest fought a two-alarm fire, which damaged Reilly & Sons on Passaic Avenue. (Box 559) Less than 6 hours later, they were working at another two-alarm fire, which damaged the Zenithern Co. at Grafton and Riverside (now McCarter Highway) Avenues. (Box 436)
1929 - Firefighter Michael J. McManus, of Engine 10, died as a result of injuries sustained when a falling beam at a fire on Charlton Street struck him on August 24th.
1957 - At 20:13 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged five dwellings on Boyd Street near 18th Avenue (Box 4224)

1883 - Controversy arose when a barn belonging to Dr. Nichols, located at Washington (now Broadway) and Chester Avenues, in the Woodside section, burned to the ground because the key for the fire alarm box could not be found.
1952 - Two 1000-GPM Mack L pumpers were assigned to Engines 12 and 22.
1963 - A single-alarm fire at 13th Avenue and Wallace Street killed six people. The cause was attributed to children playing with matches.

1907 - A second-class Amoskeag steamer was assigned to Engine 14.
1930 - Three, 200 Series, 1000-GPM American LaFrance pumpers were assigned to Engines 5, 22 and 29, costing $15,390 each.
1967 - A 1000-GPM Ward LaFrance pumper was assigned to Engine 6, costing $29,936. This was the NFD's first diesel-powered rig.
1970 - At 10:20 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged a building on Orchard Street near Tichenor Street. (Box 2342 - Tour 3) At 17:58 hours, a four-alarm fire destroyed the Winans Paper & Twine Co. on Ridgewood Avenue near W. Runyon Street. (Box 4244 - Tours 3/1)

1895 - Truck Co. 4 was placed in service at 216 Lafayette Street at Congress Street
1896 - At 2032 hours, the very last alarm was struck out from the bell tower for Box 512. The tower, at Academy and Halsey Streets, was shut down and the bell ringers were dismissed.
1918 - A Commercial electric, 75-foot aerial was assigned to Truck 5.
1931 - The entire fire alarm system was revamped. All boxes were now 4-digit and arranged so that the first number indicated the battalion, the second number indicated a certain geographic area within the battalion, and the last two numbers indicated the exact street location. The 6th alarm was done away with, automatic relocations were placed into effect, and "phantom boxes" were used for pinpointing quicker responses to fire locations. Eventually, there were to be 1,084 alarm boxes throughout the city.
1950 - A 1000-GPM FWD pumper was assigned to Engine 17, costing $18,388.
1954 - While en route to an alarm, Engine 15 collided with an auto at Orange Street and Roseville Avenue. A civilian was injured in the accident.
1967 - The task force system of responses, as placed in service during the Newark riots, remained in effect with modifications for additional alarms. They all consisted of two engines and a truck.
1971 - At 07:19 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged two frame dwellings on North 13th Street near 9th Avenue. (Box 1429 - Tours 1/3) At 15:48 hours, another two-alarm fire damaged two frame tenements on South 11th Street near 15th Avenue. (Box 4456 - Tour 3)
1985 - At 02:30 hours, a person was killed in a single-alarm fire on South 13th Street near 9th Avenue. (Tour 2)
1988 - At 10:22 hours, a single-alarm fire claimed the life of a person on Pine Grove Terrace near Grove Terrace. (Tour 4)

1932 - At 11:47 hours, a four-alarm fire destroyed the Reliable Furniture Co. at 44 Market Street near Arlington Street (Box 2214).
1948 - At 15:44 hours, the Reilly Tar Co., at Doremus and Roanoke Avenues, was the scene of another spectacular four-alarm fire (Box 4975).
1959 - At 03:55 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a factory at Broadway and 4th Avenue (Box 3222 - Tour 2).
1968 - The barrage of fires continued with a six-task force fire that destroyed seven frame tenements at Rose and Livingston Streets at 00:29 hours. This fire was spotted by a unit that was en route to another fire on Hillside Place (Box 4231 - Tour 2).
1971 - At 14:39 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged three frame tenements at 815-817-819 Hunterdon Street near Grant Avenue (Box 4651 - Tour 3). At 21:03 hours, another two-alarm fire damaged three frame tenements at 130-132-134 Elizabeth Avenue near West Alpine Street (Box 2424 - Tour 2).
1978 - At 21:37 hours, a three-alarm fire gutted a four-story brick rag warehouse at 11-13 East Runyon Street at Elizabeth Avenue (Box 2427 - Tour 4).

1929 - At 10:18 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged a structure at 87 Summit Street near New Street (Box 714). At 13:16 hours, another two-alarm fire damaged a church on Broad Street near 4th Avenue (Box 434).
1957 - At 20:13 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged Garfield School on North 6th Street near Park Avenue (Box 3418).
1961 - At 04:43 hours, a four-alarm fire destroyed Englehorn's Meat Co. at 18 Avenue L near Wilson Avenue. While climbing a ladder to the roof, firefighter Joseph Buhl, of Salvage 1, was caught under a collapsing wall that was pushed out in an explosion. He died later that day (Box 5328 - Tour 4).
1963 - At 04:19 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a row of frame tenements at 271-83 Bergen Street near 16th Avenue (Box 4251 - Tour 1).
1966 - At 03:51 hours, a three-alarm fire destroyed four frame tenements at 581-583-585-587 15th Avenue near South 15th Street (Box 4463 - Tour 1).
1971 - At 13:04 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged an apartment house at 217 Hunterdon Street near 14th Avenue. This was the sixth multiple-alarm fire in three days (Box 1344 - Tour 4).
1984 - At 16:23 hours, a chemical spill at the Sherwin-Williams Paint Co., at Lister Avenue and Brown Street, claimed the life of one employee and injured eight others (Tour 2).
NFD HISTORY - APRIL 12
1946 - At 03:59 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged a dwelling at 27 Richmond Street near West Market Street (Box 1224). At 18:19 hours, another two-alarm fire damaged two dwellings at 21-23 Rose Street near Somerset Street (Box 4136).
1953 - While answering an alarm in Vailsburg, Deputy 1 was struck by a delivery truck at Mount Vernon Place and Ellery Avenue and both vehicles overturned. Both drivers were seriously injured in the mishap.
1963 - At 05:04 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged the Art Metals Co. at 262 Passaic Street near Clay Street (Box 3174 - Tour 1). At 13:12 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged a frame tenement at 429 South 12th Street near 15th Avenue. This was the third multiple-alarm fire in two days (Box 4456 - Tour 3).
1968 - The fire-setting spree that began with the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continued. At 00:04 hours, a three-task force fire heavily damaged four frame tenements at 447-449-451 South 9th Street and 145-7 16th Avenue (Box 4314 - Tour 3). At 16:42 hours, a three-task-force fire heavily damaged two frame tenements at 716-718 Hunterdon Street near West Bigelow Street (Box 4241 - Tour 1). At 21:14 hours, one person was killed in a three-task force fire in a hotel at 60-2 East Park Street near Mulberry Street (Box 2145 - Tour 3).
1970 - At 01:05 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged four frame tenements at 339-341-343-345 Littleton Avenue near 16th Avenue (Box 4316 - Tour 4).
1974 - At 01:23 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged two frame tenements at 421-423 Springfield Avenue near Fairmount Avenue (Box 4318 - Tour 2). At 15:17 hours, a smoky two-alarm fire damaged the Ortex Chemical Co. at 560 Ferry Street near Vincent Street. This plant was heavily damaged in an explosion and four-alarm fire on May 29th, 1972 (Box 5146 - Tour 4).

1947 - At 20:30 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a factory at 82 Commercial Street near Market Street. It was the sixth three-alarm fire that Newark's Bravest fought in five weeks (Box 5117).
1968 - At 00:23 hours, a three-task force fire took the lives of three people and heavily damaged a dwelling at 86 Garden Street near McWhorter Street (Box 5423 - Tour 3).
1970 - At 16:26 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged six frame tenements at 472-474-476-478-480-482 South 12th Street near 15th Avenue (Box 4456 - Tour 2).
1971 - The responses on box alarms was changed to three engines and two trucks. If a fourth engine was required, a Signal 10 would be sounded and the fourth due engine would respond. Also, Signal 5's were transmitted over the radio in addition to the joker.
1991 - At 00:11 hours, a three-alarm fire destroyed a vacant three-story frame tenement and heavily damaged two similar, adjacent buildings, and a row of garages, at Hawthorne and Johnson Avenues (Tour 3).
NFD HISTORY - APRIL 14
1913 - The Dixon-Cascade Pump Co., a Newark-based firm, threatened to sue the city for not awarding it a contract for it's low bid on a pumper on March 27th. The Chief Engineer expressed his concern that Dixon was an inferior product and shouldn't be purchased.
1914 - A 750-GPM Boyd pumper was assigned to Engine 23.
1917 - The "Two-Platoon System" was established and the Second Tour was put in effect. Chemical 1 and Searchlight 1 were disbanded and merged to organize Squad Co. 1, at 77 Academy Street near Plane Street (now University Avenue).
1968 - At 00:23 hours, a three-task force fire heavily damaged an apartment house at 1074 Broad Street near Chestnut Street (Box 2312 - Tour 4). At 01:58 hours, a four-task force fire heavily damaged a factory at 213 Wright Street near New Jersey Railroad Avenue (Box 5517 - Tour 4). At 22:46 hours, another three-task force fire heavily damaged several frame dwellings at 36 Wainwright Street near Nye Avenue (Box 4634 - Tour 4).
1978 - At 03:54 hours, a spectacular four-alarm fire destroyed eight, three-story frame tenements on one side of Ridgewood Avenue near Avon Avenue, and six, three-story frame tenements on the opposite side. Also damaged were a three-story brick apartment house on Belmont Avenue (now Turner Boulevard), and a 2-1/2-story frame dwelling on Madison Avenue. Seven vehicles were also destroyed (Box 4256 - Tour 2). Later that morning, at 10:30 hours, another spectacular four-alarm fire destroyed a five-story brick apartment house and four attached, three-story frame tenements at 99-101-103-105-107 Mount Prospect Avenue near 6th Avenue. Three additional dwellings were damaged at 60-62-64 Stone Street, one at 40 Cutler Street, one at 21 Webster Street, and one at 37 Summer Avenue (Box 3136 - Tour 4). At 13:04 hours, a two-alarm fire at 63-68-70 High Street (now King Boulevard), destroyed two, three-story frame tenements and damaged an apartment house across the street. The fires necessitated the county mutual aid plan being activated (Box 3138 - Tour 4).
NFD HISTORY - APRIL 15
1921 - A 750-GPM Ahrens-Fox I-K-3 pumper was assigned to Engine 14, costing $13,500. Engine 19 became motorized with the rebuilt "Mt. Pelee."
1951 - At 19:51 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a factory at 23 Mott Street near Fleming Avenue (Box 5134).
1960 - At 14:15 hours, a spectacular four-alarm fire destroyed the Onyx Resin Co. yard, a coal trestle, and numerous dwellings at Market and Lexington Streets. The extreme radiant heat and flying brands caused fires to break out over a four-block area (Box 5182 - Tour 1).
1963 - At 07:19 hours, a three-alarm fire heavily damaged a factory at 539 Avenue P near Wilson Avenue (Box 5329 - Tour 3). At 16:19 hours, a two-alarm fire damaged a warehouse at 221-9 New Street near Lock Street (Box 1139 - Tour 1).
1965 - At 11:57 hours, a woman was killed in a two-alarm fire that heavily damaged two frame tenements at 486-488 Avon Avenue at South 19th Street (Box 4432 - Tour 2).
1980 - The distribution and training of new "Survivair" masks began.
1981 - At 21:26 hours, a three-alarm fire took the lives of two occupants and damaged the six-story Hotel Benzell, at 450 Broad Street at Division Street (Box 3114 - Tour 3).
