Digital TV and MSN TV
By Erfert Fenton

On February 17, 2009, a new era of television broadcasting will begin. On that day, television stations in the U.S. will stop broadcasting analog signals and begin broadcasting only in digital format.

Digital TV (DTV) allows stations to offer improved picture and sound quality, and digital is much more efficient than analog. Another important benefit of digital broadcasting is that it will free up parts of the valuable broadcast spectrum for public safety communications (such as police, fire departments, and rescue squads).

Depending on how you currently receive your TV broadcasting signal (more on this in a minute), you might have to connect an additional component in order to watch TV. However, your MSN TV receiver will continue to work after February 17.

Note: If you have a WebTV Plus that's connected to an older TV that receives broadcasting using an antenna, some TV-related features will be affected by the transition to digital programming:

The Record/Remind feature will no longer work

TV Listings will not be complete, because the additional channels available through digital broadcasting will not be listed

Because you will need to connect a digital-to-analog converter box to your TV (more on this later), you will need to use your TV's remote control, rather than your WebTV remote control or keyboard, to change TV channels

For detailed information about the transition to digital TV, go to the FCC's digital TV transition site. For a summary of some of the key issues, read on.

To determine how the transition to digital broadcasting will affect you, the first thing you should do is figure out whether your TV is digital or analog. If you already have a digital TV, you won't need to do anything to prepare for DTV broadcasting. Here are some tips for determining whether you have a digital TV:

Consult your TV owner's manual

Look up your TV model on the manufacturer's Web site

Contact the store where you bought your TV

See if the TV has a label that indicates it has a digital tuner

Tip: If you bought your TV before 1998, it's probably an analog TV. If you bought your TV in 2004 or later, chances are good that it's a digital TV.

If you have an analog TV and receive broadcasting using an antenna (either "rabbit ears" on the set or a rooftop antenna), and want to use that TV after February 17, 2009, you have two options:

Purchase a digital-to-analog converter box. (A converter box plugs into your TV and will allow you to continue to enjoy free over-the-air television. These boxes receive digital signals and convert them into analog format for display on analog TVs. Analog sets connected to converter boxes will display digital broadcasts, but not necessarily at the full digital quality.)

Note: To help support your inalienable right to watch television, the U.S. Government is offering a converter box coupon program. Between Jan. 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009, all U.S. households will be eligible to request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the purchase of up to two converter boxes.

Subscribe to a cable, satellite, or other pay TV service.

Note: Cable subscribers may need new DTV equipment to view DTV programming in digital format. You should ask your cable provider what you will need and when. Satellite subscribers may need new DTV equipment to receive and view high definition digital programming. You should ask your satellite company what you will need and when.

To summarize:

Your MSN TV receiver will still work after the conversion to digital TV broadcasting on February 17, 2009.

If you have an analog TV, you can use it to receive digital broadcasts after February 17, 2009 — but you'll need to either purchase a digital-to-analog converter box, or subscribe to a satellite, cable, or other pay TV service. (If you connect a digital-to-analog converter box, certain WebTV features will no longer be available.)

If you have a digital TV, you won't need to make any changes in order to receive digital programming. Your MSN TV receiver should continue to work normally.

Welcome to my WebTV lifestyle and some techie assistance!

A Little History:

For some reason, I never wanted a computer. Not because of the rumors or controversy that abound periodically. I just wasn't ready for one at the time. In 1998, I heard about "internet access via a TV". I checked around to see what it meant. One of my pen pals in Michigan announced that she bought a "WebTV", and that she was loving it. I continually checked around for more information. After I began to see more ads featuring WebTV and its features, I saw how reasonable the prices were for a couple of model types. On January 2, 1999, Ward's department store in Phoenix, where we're based in, had a discount, so I went there to watch the demo, liked it, and bought the Plus model. The Plus was on sale for $189.99 (down from the average $199.99). I like to purchase electronic items around Christmas season for great discounts. After I got home, I registered with WebTV Networks Office, which provides ISP service. Next, I began navigating, experiencing e-mailing, checking out various websites out there, and collecting favorites for storage. Eventually, as I became more and more proficient about WebTV and its features, as well as HTML for building web sites, I met various people around the world and even became good friends with a few, who influenced me more on the HTML browsers- what they could read, what they couldn't, in my e-mail signature and my GeoCities Website. Most, notably, I began visiting WebTV Usenet to pick up tips about dealing with WebTV and Internet/WWW in a positive and negative sense, which later evolved into my helping other WebTVers whenever they got stumped! So, here I am making this Page Builder with WebTV as a link to my main GeoCities Website (which was officially up & running on June 6, 1999). And, that's it! Since then, I've operated exclusively on WebTV Plus and never with a PC, on an intermediate level. Pretty brief, huh? The rest is history from here on there...

My Patient Pets:

~Beau & Cleo~
Beau,CGC,TDI (AKC-registered; raised since he was 3 months old) & Cleo(no title; raised since 2 months) have been here since I got my WebTV. ( And, introducing new kitty, Rudy (2/01) ! ) I'm thankful towards them, as when I got my WebTV, there was a lifestyle & routine adjustment, so they're real troupers! Each day, whenever I check my e-mail and surf, they're right next to me napping. They're great company and my daily inspiration for my Pages (and, BTW, yes they're all fixed and strictly remain indoors)...

On Apr. 24 '07, I adopted my new tortie (black-brown w/ copper eyes) Persian kitty, "Melody"! Come visit her website .

On Apr. 7 '08, I adopted "Romeo", my brindle-white (w/ black markings) Shih Tzu! Come visit his web page .

And, this is Cleo at 7½ years old here. This is my all-time favorite picture of her, in my bathroom sitting on the toilet seat cover! Notice her classic tuxedo cat appearance, with green eyes (she's officially classified as a domestic shorthair mix). Look at her 'eagerly' smiling for this picture, but really, she's reminding me of dinner!

Born January 23, 1985 @ 11 AM in Glendale, Arizona; firstborn; acquired from "accidental" breeder

And, lastly, not to leave out that Beau has had his share of 15-minute fame! An Arizona Republic newspaper photographer snapped Beau sitting on my beach chair under the umbrella (attached to chair), waiting for his turn to strut his stuff for the 'Best Non-Mutt' (Pug won) category, to benefit the Arizona Animal Welfare League, a no-kill shelter co-founded by actress Amanda Blake (Miss Kitty of "Gunsmoke" TV series), at a central Phoenix public park, on Sunday.

"TV Online" magazine may have only lasted one year (1999- I have all 12 issues. 1st 6 was free as part of Sony's offer when I bought my WebTV Plus; I liked it, so I paid for the next 6 more), TV personality (& fellow New Jersey native like me) Daisy Fuentes appeared on its front cover (July) to tell of herself as a WebTV Plus user. Visit her official site! If you sign her Guestbook, tell her I sent you from here (and don't forget my Link- thanks). And, BTW, her site is not on Page Builder or used with WebTV. It's her business site run by her representatives. Unlike Clint Howard's "unofficial" (see page 2 here, top) site, which is not really official- it's run by a devoted fan. Official sites by celebrities mean either the celebs. and/or their reps. run them; unofficial means like an independent fan site without the celebs./reps. directly getting involved officially...
Oh, and I did "appear" in one of the issues. In the "Mailbox" (letters - p. 7) section of the August issue, I wrote:

"Thank-you for your free trial subscription. I had never heard of you, so thank God you notified me. I am a subscriber now! Your magazine is very WebTV®-friendly. I have every issue since number one. I learn a lot out of each and every issue--it's like voice networking via print. Since you are fairly new, I certainly hope you continue for a long time to come!"
Karen Catalioto
via e-mail

Heh, oh, boy. They didn't even last. The editor/publisher even slightly misled me. He invited me to send him copies of my past published works in various literary publications, in order to be a columnist. I was wondering why I didn't hear back from him, so I e-mailed him, and he said TV Online was going out of business...well, why did he bother ask me to send him stuff? I paid 77¢ in postage for nothing! So, I asked for a refund along for one for unmailed issues. Ugh, the nerve how to unprofessionally treat writers.
And, that impending WebTV magazine never happened (no, I didn't wisely submit copies to them)!

"Sharp" Viewcam 4", 40X Digital Zoom, 8 mm - front / back (notice 4" easy viewing screen; no squinting to view a tiny view finder)

Also has 2-for-1 video/audio jack input. Important: Always unplug TV before plugging any camcorder into the back of a WebTV unit; this is to prevent possible frying.

And, what's this? You may ask. Well, this is a TDD (or, as most of you know, a TTY), which is a device for people with hearing- or speech-impairment who communicate back & forth via fingers instead of words on the "phone". It's like live e-mailing or chat! The language of expression is different in that i.e. instead of "LOL", we just type in "hahaha". BTW, this is a state-owned machine on a free loan, provided that I'm still a resident of Arizona (each state has its own loaner program).
