WINTER SONG
by Pat Pierce
Everyone sings of spring
and autumn and summer;
but who heralds winter,
with its greys and silvers
and whites, its winds
and drifts, and chills?
Everyone sings of sunny days
and balmy moonlit nights;
but who champions clouded skies,
storm-tossed, white-capped seas,
streaks of lightning,
and booming thunder?
When the skies grow darker,
and winds begin to howl,
and we retreat to our cocoons;
when the earth is resting
beneath a downy blanket of snow,
I will sing this winter song.
