Webtv Viewer Info

Certain Webtv-only codes, such as the ones below, cannot be "seen" by computer users without the use of the "Webtv Viewer". No amount of "fixing up your html codes" will enable 'puter users to see these Webtv effects as intended UNLESS they use the "Webtv Viewer".

The Info

Here's the Webtv Viewer download link area---view it to see the cautionary notes they include there----(puters do not automatically download it when the site is accessed):

Here's what the Webtv Viewer looks like on an iMac:

While a major drawback for computer users with a dialup internet connection is the initial download time (an hour or more to download), computer users with a dsl or cable internet connection will usually be able to download it in less than 5 minutes.

Once it is downloaded and installed (nothing out of the ordinary is involved in the installation process), the 'puter user clicks onto the "Webtv Viewer" icon and a pre-set, non-adjustable window opens up for webpage viewing, along with a "remote control" image.

The viewer can be used with the on-screen "remote" or with the icons at the top of the 'puter and links can be clicked onto directly with the computer's mouse.

The pre-set, non-adjustable window that opens up is approximately 544-width and 370-height, or 560-width and 420-height, or something similar to that.

It has not fouled up the iMac I am using and downloads, installs and works rather quickly and easily, but others have claimed it fouls up their 'puters, so downloaders beware (which is nothing new to 'puter users).

Opinions
(not for the easily offended)

The "Webtv Viewer" was originally intended for 'puter site developers to see how their sites would look like on a webtv.....but to say that it is being misused when used by 'puters for other purposes is utterly RIDICULOUS.

Contrary to narrowminded Webtv Viewer detractors, many tools can be used for purposes other than their original intent. If you are using a lot of "webtv-only" codes, then the Webtv Viewer does serve a purpose for computer users.

The older "Webtv Viewer" download area stated that it was a beta-level version and that it may have bugs in it----but to say or imply that all, or most, puters will have trouble with it is just misleading.

And if you buy into the "but it's not being used for the intended purpose", well, among other things, adding html codes to the signature area of e-mail for posts and e-mail was probably not intended by Webtv developers either; but how many do it????

The signature area states:
Mail signature

Type a short text signature here and it will be
added to the end of each mail message you send.

And adding html codes to the PageBuilder webpages was probably not intended by the Webtv developers either---it is set up for "point and click", "type in some text" and "we will do the rest" for easy webpage building.

And finally, kdine@webtv.net sayeth:

"It's your responsibility as a webmaster to conform your pages to all the major browsers out there."

What a load of crock!!!

If you have chosen to use the Webtv-only codes, then you have chosen not to conform in the first place. dooh!!!

So......the main points of this webpage are:

  • Certain webtv-only codes (such as audioscopes, xspeed / yspeed / transitions in body tags, fonsize="small | medium | large" in body tags, selected in the anchor tag, gradcolors in tables, onMouseOver audios, etc. etc. etc. ) cannot be seen by computer users.

  • No amount of "fixing up your html codes" will enable 'puter users to see these effects as intended UNLESS they use the "Webtv Viewer".

  • Contrary to Webtv Viewer detractors, many tools can be used for purposes other than their original intent. If you are using a lot of "webtv-only" codes, then the Webtv Viewer does serve a purpose for computer users.

  • It does not foul up all computers and ultimately it is the choice of the 'puter user to decide if they want to spend the time downloading it and using it---Narrow minded control freaks will advise against even offering the option of the Webtv Viewer to 'puter users.
