St. James the Moorslayer
St. James the Elder, one of the twelve apostles of Christ, had traveled widely on the Iberian peninsula, bringing Christianity to the Celtic peoples. St. James the brother of John and also a fisherman, was among the first disciples chosen by Jesus to accompany Him. He, along with Peter and John were closest to Jesus and were selected by Him to be present with Him at the Transfiguration (MARK 9:1-7) and the Agony in the Garden (MATTHEW 26:36-46). St. James was the first of the Apostles to be martyred by Herod Agrippa I in 44 A.D..............Santiago Matomoro, his namesake, St. James the Moorslayer, appearing on a white horse in 844 A.D. lead Christians into battle against the Moors.
